Pulling/sucking hair

My baby boy has an obsessive compulsive need to eat hair. He sucks his fingers and when he’s really crying, he frantically pulls at my hair, wraps it around his fingers and sucks them. It soothes him immediately. I’ve tried putting my hair up but he still grabs at the hairs on the nape of my neck and sometimes pulls them out because he’s that aggressive with it. I keep finding hair in his poo. He has also resorted now to yanking his own hair until strands come out so that he can suck on them. I’m getting a bit worried. Does anyone else’s baby do this??

I don't personally have any issue with this, my daughter will yank at her hair when she's mad but not eat it. Maybe talk to his peds ? Maybe there is a vitamin deficiency or something for why he's doing that, kinda like people with low iron eat a lot of ice Maybe something like that ? But idk just the way he's really going at it, and poor baby that can't feel good to rip out his hair like that 😕

So i don't really wanna worry you but I was looking it up and it says that calls for medical attention 😬 although it could also be nothing but I'd probably get him seen just to be sure.

Babies are weird. I would just keep an eye on it and bring it up at the next appointment. Not an emergency.

Take him to a specialist. Eating hair is not good. You’re finding it in his poo? It can get wrapped up in his organs and cause for surgery down the line. Please go to a specialist. ASAP.

Hmmm I wouldn’t be too concerned. I’d bring it up at his next pediatrician appointment

Oh god the mixed reactions here! I will speak to someone about it, thank you everyone

This looks like good advice for the meantime. For babies and younger children: Try to redirect their attention from pulling their hair by covering their hands with mittens or socks, providing other sensory toys, or keeping their hair short. Avoid giving negative attention: When your child pulls their hair, avoid reacting negatively, as this can inadvertently reinforce the behavior.

Does baby seem stressed often? He could be doing this to self soothe, although it's obviously not a healthy technique

My little one does this. Sucks the same two fingers and yanks at her hair. So sometimes hair will still be entwined on her fingers when she sucks them. I've never found any in her poo though so not sure if your little one injests more than mine but I am not worried one jot! X
