General Anaesthetic/surgery

I have some retained placenta in my uterus and I’m having it removed next Wednesday after waiting 7 weeks for it to be looked into. Has anyone had General Anaesthetic and/or surgery that can advise on what to expect regarding feeding? I’ll try pump before hand to cover the time I’m actually in hospital, but is there likely to be any issues for breast feeding after? Any experience/advice welcome please 🥺

Same thing happened to my mom, they waited for 7-8 weeks and she had high high fever before being admitted. They gave her all sorts of antibiotics and injections and finally had surgery to be removed (they didn’t identify the issue until 7 weeks later) just gave her bunch of stuff cause they thought she is just reacting after birth. She tried to express the milk though out the day at the hospital but unfortunately ended up losing the supply few weeks later. The added stress was what was the worst I believe. Not sure if you’re having same issue but I would make sure to try and be stress free as much as you can in situation you’re in, I know it’s tough. Make sure to pump/express every 2 hours and stay hydrated before and after the surgery! Good luck!!!

@Jovana yeah, I’ve had recurring infections and antibiotics which have been messing us both up with side effects. I’ll try de-stress - it’s good advice. I feel so frustrated at the time lost and that it was their mess up in the first place (I had a c-section after they left me for 23 hours with my waters broken after an induction). Thank you

@Rhiann hang in there!! Take care of yourself first so you can take care of her! What she needs is a healthy mama!!!

I'm having a surgery postpartum as long as all they use is general anesthesia, they told me I'm safe to breastfeed the second I can safely hold the baby after waking up

@Olivia so baby is allowed to be in there with dad or nan waiting? The hospital I’m in was really funny about visitors before and were frankly quite vile. They kicked my partner out within 45 mins of me coming round from my general anaesthetic c-section so I’m concerned they won’t be considerate of this.

I would say to definitely have an alternative source of feeding in any case especially an emergency. I'm still going to pump 3-5 feeds worth and in a desperate situation have a can of formula standby with dad. I'm not sure how considerate they'll be with allowing the baby in as a visitor ASAP, but my main concern was the safety of my milk on painkillers and anesthesia which you should absolutely double check

The same thing happened to me. I pumped some milk for my baby and let my anesthesiologist know I was breastfeeding and he said it was okay to nurse once I woke up.

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. And after a c section, maybe you should think about suing. Contact the fb group breastfeeding and lactation support uk they have really stellar advisors who are professionally trained! I would bring some snacks and your own water bottle so you can be sure you can get hydrated and fed after you come round because hospitals are v crap at that Your hospital sounds awful 😫 sending so many hugs for what you've been through. Really hope you can recover finally after all this and put it behind you ❤️ massive well done for breastfeeding throughout this kind of struggle
