Which breast feeds to start dropping?

I am EBF but I’m not going to lie - it’s hard work even still, 5 months in. I want to start getting excited about dropping feeds, once we start weaning. But which ones to drop? Part of me thinks it’s the nighttime ones (evening and 3am) as then my husband can help & I can also through… plus being able to BF on the go during the day will be most convenient… But then I think I heard getting ‘sleepy milk’ is key to helping LOs sleep, and is the best milk. So having a ‘rest’ in the day, and milky snuggles evening/3am etc. Any thoughts? I don’t want my supply to drop right off, as I reckon by combi feeding I could keep going for a few more months… Thanks!!

Congratulations on getting this far EBF, it’s a big commitment!🥳 From everything i’ve seen, initially month 6/7 your baby should consume pretty much the same amount of milk as they are most likely not getting much from the food yet, those first months are about flavours, textures, getting them used to the routine of eating. With breast feeding i believe the advice is to follow their lead on how much milk they want and keep feeding on demand so i personally won’t look to choose a feed to drop. If you want to combi feed you can pump or introduce formula, and personally i think i would do that now before adding in the big change of weaning. To me making a bottle at night or out and about seems like a hassle so i would pick early evening. Could you do it when your partner is home from work so that you get a chance to take time for yourself? The NHS has advice on how to do it: https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/feeding-your-baby/mixed-feeding/introduction-to-mixed-feeding/

There's no right or wrong answer. Just ro give you a new perspective. Baby may naturally drop the night feed soon. Quite a few breastfed babies I know dropped night feeds by 6 months. I also remember with my first to be on 4 feed by 9 months (maybe earlier but can't remember) one first thing in the morning, one before bed and 2 during the day. That felt so easy to fit in the day. And she would take expressed milk or formula if needed. So it does get easier naturally too.

My girl is 5 months on the 5th and this last week has stopped feeding in the night. Before that she was still waking 3/4 times in the night for a feed. She’s dropped this feed herself; I still demand feed in the day. I just go with whatever she wants x

I EBF so I feed on demand. I'll be honest, my last baby still fed every 1.5 to 2 hours day and night until he was over 1 yo 🤣

@Jai hiya! Quick qu, when you say she dropped the night feeds, did she start sleeping through the usual times she’d wake to eat or would she still wake but just not be hungry?

@Pelumi hiya. She completely has stopped waking in the night! She woke up about 5 for a feed this morning but only 5 mins and went straight back off! I’ve been feeding her more in the evening and no matter when she last fed I offer her more before I put her down for bed and it’s working wonders. She tends to go from 10-7:30/8am now. It’s just naturally happened; I will say though she’s VERY hungry when she wakes up and feeds for about 45 mins x
