Nipple shields

Has anyone successfully breastfed using nipple shields? I really want to try breastfeeding for the second time after a hellish experience with my first. But my nipples are so incredibly sensitive to touch that I think the only way I’ll manage it is if I use nipple shields every time.

I have to use nipple shields every feed due to the shape of my nipples (flat) and they help a lot, baby wouldn’t latch otherwise. They helped with the pain at the beginning too but the pain is gone now!

Absolutely. I had to use nipple shields because of the same issue & used them every time. Ignored everyone who told me to get rid of them. Baby eventually wouldn’t latch without them.

Oh, that’s so good to hear! Are all nipple shields the same or are some better than others? It’s been 16 years since I had my first and it feels like everything has changed! 🤔

Yes. My baby used to nurse with no issues and then started refusing the breast and nipple shields saved my breastfeeding journey. 2 months later she is now starting to accept breast again. They're supposed to be a temporary fix though.

I successfully used nipple shields. It was the only way my daughter would latch. It just was a pain to use, but you'll nipples should desensitise after a month or two so you hopefully won't need them a long time

I used them every time for around 4 months and then he’d occasionally latch without until around 6 months he just decided he didn’t need the shield anymore but as long as baby is gaining weight etc ignore how pushy the health visitors can be about them x

I have implants so BF is extremely painful but I definitely want to try again

Yes used for about 5 months until she started taking them off. Helped when she couldn’t latch. Make sure to measure up as if it’s the wrong size makes it harder for them to feed. I found feeds where shorter when I stopped using them xx

I have fed using nipple shields for our whole breastfeeding journey due to a few issues along the way and little guy is now 9 and a half months old. One thing I would say is that using them may have contributed to me getting mastitis due to it being a different way of feeding and draining the boob so something just to watch out for

@Hollie i use Medela ones, which is what the midwives gave me to try in hospital. You need to buy the right size, which is hard to know. I wouldn’t have known had I not been able to try a few sizes in hospital. My nipples are small in comparison to most and I use the 20mm size, if that helps x

I use them as baby had a tongue tie at the beginning and it was agony until it was cut. Then baby wouldn’t latch without so I carried on using them. Absolutely saved my bf journey. She will start to feed without them sometimes now (she’s almost 5months) and they are a faff but if it means you can breast feed then surely it’s worth it. I use mam ones as can sterilize in microwave in the case. Good luck
