Hello, first time mum and born yesterday. She sleeps all through the day but is just screaming throughout the night, she won’t latch (only for like 5 mins a day) - any suggestions?

If she's screaming, she may be uncomfortable. Check her nappy, see if she's too hot, maybe change her clothes too. Be sure her nappy isn't on her navel too. You've got this mama

Is feeding going well? Sorry not sure if I understand right because you said she doesn’t latch, how long does she go between feedings, and is she able to latch, just doesn’t want to ?

Keep her up by stimulating her with toys or music. So she knows it’s the day time. Let her nap but no longer than two hours so she’ll get tired when it comes to night time. Hopefully that way she’ll sleep throughout the night

Try holding her against your chest and humming, worked brilliant with my baby. Once settled just check if she's too hot or too cold my touching her chest. Hold her up for a bit against your chest.. she may need a burp. Good luck lovely!

Maybe she is hungry, has colic, gas, needs to poop, wants closeness, needs changing, hot, cold, go through everything one by one and see the best way to sort out such issue. Latching help contact your health visitor and ask them to come round and help you with feeding, they helped me alot, they maybe able to help you with finding out what's wrong bless her My baby cried alot when newborn, he ended up with colic and would scream all night. I did pumpy dumps dance cuddled and rocked them on my chest standing up, winded them etc

@Agata not really, she latches for like 5 minutes sucks and then just kind of licks.

If your concerned she's not feeding Latching them ask Ur midwife to come.to you... But you'll get a home visit anyway. Is it day 2 and 4? Both mine were very unsettled day 2 &3. It's a big adjustment being born! Just try and keep calm. She will be calmer if you are too. It could be wind? Make sure you gently burp after each feed. 5 mins might just be all she needs each feed... Just check her position is good.. nose to nipple and when her mouth opens wide, pop it in. Lol Hope you get some sleep soon x

Congratulations mama! Try different feeding positions and wind her after feeding. My baby was 5 weeks premature so after a few sucks he'd get tired and stop. They're still learning how to suck so she may be hungry but her latch will get better and her suck will get stronger. Just keep trying. Lots of skin to skin is great for milk production. Good luck, you got this!!! ❤️

Baby needs to be having at least 8 feeds a day. You shouldn’t have been discharged if baby hasn’t been feeding well. Contact your assessment unit/postnatal ward for some advice and so they can assess everything for you.

Congratulations! The second night is always a hard night as baby is just realising that they're not inside you anymore. The first night, they're usually tired from the birth so very sleepy. Try not to stress about it. Accept that you might not get much sleep tonight - make yourself a cuppa tea, watch something you enjoy and try doing some skin to skin (this might also help with feeding) The good thing is that a newborns stomach is very small and they don't need a lot of colostrum to fill them. If you're still concerned, you can always look at YouTube videos on hand expressing and you could try feeding your baby with a sterile spoon

Congratulations 🎉 Like Lauren said, we found the second night a shock as we thought we had the dream sleeper on the first night but the midwife said it's due to having just been born and the second night, the shock sets in! (For us both 🙈). You'll get there for sure, it's a learning curve the first couple of weeks but you'll get into the swing of it. Hopefully you've got a supportive Partner who can tag team with you so you can get some sleep here and there.

You got some good advice here, definitely if she isn’t feeding well, get some urgent help from your midwife or a local Latch On group.

How did your night go? Did you and baby get any rest? Hope she settled!

@Mariam yes been some amazing advice (still in the hospital) She latched on a few times and drank a little which was good, but also syringed a lot of colostrum, she fell asleep on boob but when putting her down she would cry - so didn’t get much sleep but she did so that’s what matters

Aw so glad to hear! If you're still in the hospital they're usually quite good, you can buzz and ask for help. Remember baby has just entered the world and needs you for comfort, she's resting in the most comfortable place for her which is on you ❤️

Make sure you get some rest too! Maybe Dad could have some skin to skin nap time with baby ☺️
