Development

My boy is 8.5months and has been quiet advanced physically he was sitting up just before 5 months, bum shuffling at 5 months, crawling at 7 months, pulls himself up to stand and cruises along furniture at 8 months. However…. He hasn’t started babbling yet. He makes vocal sounds and copies aaaa sounds from an adult and copies a scream at the end of row row row your boat but he’s still very far from saying anything like mama and dada. I brought a cute baby photo album which has photos of me and his dad so when he looks at the photo’s I always comment mama and dada and he really studies my mouth. Should I be concerned? When he wants an adults attention he’s starting making like a gasping sound which after googling is a sign of them exploring vocal sounds. Before this he was making a grunt sound to get adults attention, he’s definitely trying and is making some sounds but I’ve never heard him babble sounds such as bababa gagaga

It’s too early to be concerned. Babies tend to focus on different skills at different times, so if your baby has been advanced with his gross motor skills it’s highly likely he has been focussing on these and the verbal skills will follow in due course! My first was slower on the gross motor side of things, but his social/verbal skills were more advanced. They are all just very different and there is so much for them to learn in these first couple years. But absolutely nothing to worry about this early! He will get there. Try not to worry and just enjoy the journey!

sounds very advanced to me. My baby babbles all day but wouldn't scream after row row your boat or gasp for attention. She can only sit & roll which is the same as all the other 8-9 months old we know at playgroups!

Do not worry. This sounds exactly like my now 3 year old. He was walking independently by nine months but was behind on his speech for a while. He was about 17 months before he said his first word. He has more than made up for it now and never stops talking. Your LB is just putting all his energy into developing his motor skills first.

@Nikki thank you! 😊
