Does anyone else’s baby drink a lot of water?

I have tried to limit my son’s water intake but he just wants to drink water all the time & will kick up a fuss if we don’t let him have water. I’m just wondering if this is a sign of something or I’m just overthinking it?

How much do you think is too much? X

why are you trying to limit it? x

@Emma it’s advised that they only drink water at mealtimes, however, he wants to drink water all the time. Whenever he sees his water bottle he wants it. He would happily drink 8 oz plus a day.

No, they can have between 8 to 32 ounces of water a day as long as breastmilk or formula is not replaced fully. I have started offering my little girl water as and when she wants it because then she’s not on the boob as much and equally I’ve started introducing cows milk at the same time so she has a range of things to drink from as long as they’re not going over 32 ounces I don’t see the problem in letting him drink water.

@Jodie drinking too much water can lead to water intoxication due to an imbalance. Being excessively thirsty can be a sign of underlying problems such as diabetes etc which is what I am worried about x

my baby drinks around 10oz of water a day. Has done for a few months now. I’m not going to limit as he’s walking so will be needing to keep hydrated. I told HV at the check up and she just said ‘wow that’s a lot of fluid ounce in a day’ and then moved on to a different subject so we’re going with the flow. I don’t leave his cup down but a couple times an hour or when he’s done a lot of moving I’ll offer it him x

my boy drinks a lot of water throughout the day, which is normal as he is having less milk feeds and eats three meals a day. water intoxication happens if water begins to replace nutrients. i do understand your point about excessive thirst so i guess the question is how much do you think he’s actually consuming? is he actually drinking like a whole cup when he’s asking for it or is he only having small bits often?

My boy loves his water. I give it with meals and offer it throughout the day. The daily limit is a lot more than I thought x

My girl drinks loads of water I just let her get on with it. She has her cup with her all the time and she just has it as and when she pleases. Maybe he’s seeing it as something special if it’s not always there if that makes sense? If it’s always with him he might not gravitate to it as much x

If you have any worries your best bet is going to the GP. But maybe because its warm out and he's more thirsty.
