Breastfeeding while pregnant

I have a 12 year old who breastfed until she was 2.5, and I am currently breastfeeding a 2 year old with no stop in sight. So I am quite used to breastfeeding and pumping. However, I just found out I’m pregnant (5ish weeks) and wondering about others’ experiences with breastfeeding while pregnant/tandem breastfeeding etc. Any tips or stories or advice? Tia

All I can say is I’m 29 weeks pregnant with baby #2 and still nursing my 1st born 3 times a day. She’s 2 years and 3 months old. I have no idea when I’ll stop nursing completely because it’s helping with her weight gain and nap times but I am trying to cut back to twice/ once a day. Nipple cream has been my best friend since my nipples are very sore nowadays but otherwise, I’ve had great success continuing nursing while pregnant. I’m just going to go with the flow and if I’m still nursing my 1st born when my 2nd baby arrives, that’s okay. The biggest struggle for me is my family and husband’s family making negative comments/ asking questions out of judgement so I do my best to focus on how strong my body is to care for my littles. Definitely stay hydrated, eat as much as you want with no shame, and keep taking prenatal vitamins. You’ll probably be extra tired so don’t feel bad for resting when you can.

I’ve been tandem feeding with my two for over 9 months. My eldest was 2.5 when her sister was born so she wasn’t feeding loads and I had limited it when I was pregnant as it was making me feel sore. I’m guessing my supply dried up a bit at some point but it didn’t seem to bother her. She only had 1-2 feeds a week now but would happily feed loads if I let her! 😂 I think it was great for helping her bond with her new baby sister. I don’t enjoy feeding them both at the same time as it’s a bit overstimulating for me, but I’ve done it to keep the peace! I’ve had negative comments from family too but I try to ignore them.

@Tay thank you for this! I haven’t felt any changes with my breasts/nipples/or supply yet. But I’ll def keep the cream in mind! But it’s so good to hear successful stories and feel solidarity. Thank you and congrats!

@Lauren oh I can see overstimulation being a big thing for me. But I also hope my toddler keeps going so o have a chance to try tandem feeding? I’ve always wanted to do that for some reason? Congratulations to you for your 9 month milestone! That’s awesome! I feel so inspired and excited to try my hand at this! Thank you!!!

@Bri yes it can be a lot!! I hope your little one keeps going for you 🤞 thank you! I don’t know many people that have tandem fed but it feels like quite an achievement!

I breastfed my first until he was 4m, fell pregnant and my supply went MIA almost immediately (I suppose severe HG & COVID can do that). My second I breastfed until he was 16m at which point I was 6m pregnant. It got too much for me though - biting, constant comfort feeding especially overnight (every 1-1.5hrs), only one boob was producing milk so got really overstimulating. I’d say if it’s something you want to keep doing then go for it just make sure to remember that you’re consuming for 3 so plenty of food and water. And don’t forget that your health matters too so if you feel like you can’t there’s no shame in stopping
