Baby is 13mo and we've been doing cloth since birth, so there's been a lot of trial and error. Right now we are using a BabyKicks hemp-cotton prefold (discontinued but you can try Thirsties or Nora's Nursery), Puppi bamboo-cotton fitted, 2 Responsible Mother merino wool boosters, and a poly fleece liner, under a handknitted wool cover. I trifold the prefold and insert a wool booster into each fold so I have a boosted booster. That gets inserted into the pocket of the fitted, the fitted is lined with the fleece liner, and then topped with the cover. These are kinda expensive items, so I only have enough for 4 nights. I've successfully cobbled together solutions without one or another component, but never without the wool boosters and cover. They seem to be essential for us. I found that a slightly big wool cover is way less likely to leak than a slightly small one, so size up! I used to use Disana but they're pricey. Now I knit my own because they're incredibly cheap. I use the Curly Purly Soaker pattern.
We just finally got our nighttime cloth routine down my daughter still nurses through the night so she pees a lotttt. I use a XL pocket because of all the absorbency it’s thick lol but i stuff it with a 12 or 15 layer trifold and a booster everything we use for nighttime is from cloth joy ! We use the new heavy wetter trifolds and booster and they have Athletic wicking jersey on top they are so soft !
I put an extra insert in for nighttime. I also use a reusable pee pad under her in case there are any leaks.
For my first we used pockets with an extra booster layer. When that wasn't enough with our second, we finally tried wool. A cotton prefold under a Disana wool cover became our nighttime setup until he potty-trained.
