Baby choking on breast milk

Helpppp because this is upsetting me. I have reached out to my local lactation people for advice. What can I do about her choking on my breast after just a few minutes of feeding?

A different position. How old is baby? You can try laying back method and have her on top of you. Or one your side and do side laying. Bother positions help. You may just have a fast letdown & it will get better with her getting older

@Ashley she’s six days old, and still mastering the latch. I try latch her on first and then lean back but she’s still doing it 😩

You could try manual pumping or expressing with your hand the first let down into the haaka and then latching her

@Ashley I feel like I don’t understand the let down thing. Is that the first bits of milk? If so how long do I pump for without creating an oversupply? My breasts are still super engorged and I’m struggling with that too

You can have multiple letdowns a feeding. But normally the first letdown can be the “overactive/forceful letdown” in someone with an oversupply. The easiest way to explain it is.. when it starts spraying out and sometimes you can feel it. The little nerves and sensation. Once the spray begins to slow down.. the let down is over and milk will be slower to come out. That’s the best way I can describe it. I wouldn’t pump any extra. Just manually and slowly that first let down to give her a little break

Your milk supply should calm down and meet her needs by 6-8 weeks

@Ashley okay I will try this, thank you

I also had this fast let down and with changing position to slow it down it didn’t happen as often. Baby is 5wks now and he doing much better and rarely happens now so ur little one will get there 😊

It takes about 3 months for the "newborn boobs" then your boobs won't get so engorged. Make sure you eat and hydrate enough and baby will get better with the letdown with time

Try and recline yourself if you lean back slightly it helps with fast letdown

Using the haakke to catch the initial letdown won't encourage over supply... it will just take the edge off for your baby x

@Suzie how long should I do this for?

@Charlotte you'll be able to tell when the flow has slowed a bit but usually a few minutes x

@Suzie okay thank you I’ll try this. Is it fine for her to then only drink for like a couple mins? I’ve only been managing maybe 5 mins

I think it’s the letdown as that happens to my baby. He’s 3 weeks old and sometimes comes off coughing and when he does my milk is spraying in his face and once it stops he is fine going back on. It only happens if he hasn’t fed for a while or first thing in the morning

Try tilting baby slightly upward with your knee as support. (Eg using a foot rest to elevate your legs) Contact nipple shields help with controlling the spraying sensation from the milk, that might be triggering the choking. Also whilst feeding a great way to ease the pressure on the other side a haaka/milk collector would come in handy.

I had this issue with my little girl the first few weeks. The cradle breastfeeding position was the only one that worked for us and I just made sure I was leant back with her on top of me. She’s 6 months now and it’s no longer a problem, just make sure your back is supported and you’re also comfortable while feeding. The first few weeks are the hardest, it’ll get so much easier!

Mine does this, i think only time she doesn't choke on it is if I'm laying on my side, i blame my let down, i think its too fast, you can try expressing some milk first especially if you're feeling quite full, could be a latch issue as well, im between a rock and a hard place with mine as if she has a shallow latch she'll choke on milk, if its a deep latch she tends to gag on the nipple 😅 I remember having the same issue with my 1st baby and he got used to it after a few weeks, if baby is very young could just be getting the knack of it, you're boobs and baby will end up syncing up, I managed 2 and half years breast feeding my first after a fair few hiccups at the start 😅
