Cot bumpers

I know they're a big "no no" when it comes to the nhs and safe sleep, but does anyone use cot bumpers for their 16 month olds? My little boy messes around so much when he's falling and asleep and when he's asleep, that he's constantly bashing his head on the sides and top of the cot. Surely at this age they're more aware and can move their face if their face is against it? Thank you xx

It’s also a strangulation risk (i.e they pull it off and it gets wrapped round their neck or they get caught up in it trying to climb out) as well as a suffocation risk (i.e face pressed against it). Even the breathable ones pose a strangulation risk. He’s unlikely to really hurt himself thrashing around - maybe the odd bruise. I personally wouldn’t risk it.

@Jenny ok, thank you. I know he probably won't hurt himself but he wakes himself up constantly. Thought maybe extra padding would help x

You have my full solidarity- my now 5 year old has always been a wild sleeper and would wake herself up banging against the cot. She still thrashes around like a wild banshee but it doesn’t wake her up anymore. I think it took her a few weeks when she was about 18 months (when it started) then she’d just go back to sleep. Maybe some extra soft toys popped strategically round his head could help bolster him. I think lullaby trust also says it’s safe to introduce a pillow at 12 months.

I have them for my daughter, they are tied to the cot and I struggle to undo them, she’s had them in her cot since day one of her being in there, 4 months, have had no problems. I took them out once and all she did was keep hitting her head or feet waking herself up. X

We have a small double cot bed and my LO still manages to hit his head 🤣

Hey, I just wouldn’t risk it. I’d rather a bump than something more sinister. You never know, they could be unwell or in a deep sleep and not move their face; I just don’t feel it’s worth the risk

I’ve used the purflo bumpers since my baby was about 7 months. Always been fine. He also has a pillow now as well and he’s been fine with that. The purflo bumpers are made of breathable mesh. I use them cos he used to bump his head all the time and I couldn’t stand it. You have to use your own judgement.

We use the purflo bumpers - I know they’re not recommended but they’re breathable, they collapse if they try to stand on them and they’re attached with really strong Velcro - no strings etc. we mainly use them to keep his dummy’s from falling through the bars!

I have the mesh purflo bumpers on my 16 month olds cot, he's had them since he was around 8 months and moved into his own room. I was really against bumpers but he was constantly getting his arms and legs stuck between the bars and hurting himself trying to get them back out.
