Lack of gross motor skills

So my almost 11 month old can only army crawl. He can sit unaided but cannot get into the sitting position independently. We did have the HV out and she just wanted worried and was more worried about his lack of growth. I’m so worried something is going on as I had a lot of complications during pregnancy and he’s under paediatricians for reoccurring illness. Every child is so different and I know you shouldn’t compare but it’s so hard not too as my daughter at his age was crawling properly, standing up unaided and walked 2 weeks after her 1st birthday. I feel like we are such a long way from where he should be and it’s sad to watch him want to do things and he can’t. I’m so worried for when he starts nursery at the start of June because he’s just not very mobile. I’ve attached a video of him crawling for attention as he’s just so adorable and I just feel so sorry for him 😞

Mama listen, my boy starts nursery on Tuesday & Wednesday (his two settling in sessions) & he cannot crawl at all. He’s only recently started standing on his feet when we stand him up but he isn’t stable on his legs yet bc he’s on the chunkier side (think he was 23lbs5ozs at his last check up about 4 weeks ago), he cannot get into the sitting position himself either, but bc he isn’t crawling I think that’s why, he can sit unaided & pulls himself up with all his might when he’s laid down on us & still needs help with that but it’s okay! He’ll be in the baby room at our nursery until he’s 18 months when he can walk (if he can walk by then) bc he’ll be in the baby room when he starts - don’t panic. As you said every baby is different & if no one else is concerned professionalism wise then you shouldn’t be either. Enjoy him needing you rn bc it won’t last forever as you know having another baby. He’ll get there he just isn’t ready to do those big boy things yet & that’s totally okay. 🥹🤍

Don't worry too much, easier saod than doen I know. My little one was born 0th May 24 and can't even army crawl or crawl at all, although she can sit unaided and gets herself into the sitting position if we put her in the crawl position. They all do things at their own pace, that's what I have to keep reminding myself. A friend saod that some babies don't crawl at all and just skip straight to walking xxx

@Sarah thank you so much, this is literally what I needed to hear. I think because my first born was so quick with everything that’s why I’m like but he’s still not doing it. He will also be in baby room and at his nursery they are in baby room until 2. People are like he’s a boy he’s just lazy. I can see it in his eyes he’s not lazy he just really wants to go but just can’t bless him. My little one also is very weak on his legs too but I’ve started encouraging standing too with him to help and he does so well but then goes tiptoes again and flops at the knees. I know he will get there, I just see all these other posts of babies walking already and we are just no where near there 🥺

My son is the exact same. All we can do is give them floor time to explore and attempt to crawl and sit up. My son has just started sitting up unaided and crawling, he still topples over. He’s not pulling himself up against furniture and walking along it either. My first was doing all this by 8/9 months. I agree it’s hard not to compare, I do the same. He’s also still on purées and has no interest what so ever in solids. Each baby grows at their rate, take no notice of “milestone ages”, I find myself thinking “well he’s not doing this Nd should have months ago”

I know 5 babies born in May 2024 3 of them are not crawling! All in their own time mama, your babe is totally going to crawl, walk and do all the things.

I know it won’t stop your worrying but my little one is 11 months, she dosnt stand by her self, she can’t sit her self up and only army crawls. She had her 1 year review last week and yes she is behind on gross motor still but they are not worried. Babies do things when they are ready. My baby didn’t even arm crawl when she started nursery and she has flourished. Done so much more since being there! They don’t need to be mobile to go nursery x

My daughter can’t crawl or get in to sitting position herself either (born end of May, but premature). She is about to start with a childminder so I’m hoping seeing other babies crawling round will help.

My daughter never crawled, never even army crawled. She started sitting from lying down on her first birthday. So when she started nursery a week after her first birthday I was thinking like what is she going to do?? Just sit there?? I hoped being around other kids would motivate her. She walked at 14 months and is absolutely fine now, the health visitor wasn’t worried about her as she could weight bare. And at nursery she’s an absolute character and definitely not behind in any sense. They all do things so differently, my son can crawl, can sit from lying down, started cruising on furniture, doing things far quicker than my daughter did. But then he doesn’t say mama or dada yet and he’s almost one, but my daughter was saying mama at 7 months and dada at 9 months 🤷‍♀️

Without sounding repetitive, my baby is the same, born mid may 2024. She starts nursery in 2 weeks. She only sits, bum shuffles but can't get to sitting on her own from the ground She doesn't crawl in the traditional sense I am also abit worried but also remembering like everyone said, they develop differently and in their own time. I am grateful she is very vocal, she says dada, waves and says hi, claps when instructed and is a great eater and good sleeper now; she is just slower on the gross motor side of things and that's ok. We'll get there ❤️

In the EXACT same position as you OP! incl the worry about growth (he is v short!) following

Just to say I was worried too...until two weeks ago when all of a sudden she is now crawling and pulling herself up on everything...she's now so close to walking. This was a three days after she turned 11 months! It will happen mama you are doing a brilliant job give him time xx

My LB did exactly this for what seemed like forever until a couple of weeks ago when he all of a sudden started crawling and I was concerned too because my girls were a lot more advanced even though we really shouldn't be ....you can tell in the video that he's trying ...it just takes time it must be so hard for them they are learning to use and build certain muscles for the first time ...plus I have been told by a few people that it typically takes boys longer 🤷‍♀️ don't know if there's any truth to that but from my personal experience with boy v girl it has...he still sometimes prefers to army everywhere even though he knows how to crawl xx

My little one still can’t really get into the sitting position and bum shuffles instead of crawling. She’s only just started occasionally pushing herself up from her front to sitting position, but she can’t go from laying flat. I wouldn’t worry about just that on its own as they have plenty of time to develop those skills, just lots of practice showing him how to transition from laying to sitting. I’d say if he doesn’t show any signs of improvement after a really big focus on tummy time, showing him how to move, strengthening his core etc. then maybe speak to the HV again but you will most likely see a massive difference in a week or two. I would also suggest getting rid of any walkers or jumperoos, we did and it helped x
