Toddler roaming the house at night

OMG last night my 3.5 year old son climbed over the baby gate we have at his bedroom door (not potty trained yet so doesn't need the toilet at night), walked up 16 steps (we live in a split level house), and over to the master bedroom. Why am I proud, mortified, happy, and scared all at the same time?! He has hypotonia (low muscle tone), so the fact that he managed any of that amazes me! He didn't walk until after 2 years old. Ok how do I keep him in his room at night now?? Stairs are dangerous!

I don't know any other circumstances, is any details about his health, but as long as your house is mostly toddler proofed, then the independence should be encouraged. He's almost four, and he's starting to show that ability to venture, so just make the environment as safe as possible, and maybe work on the steps with him more so you're a little more confident with him getting up and possibly climbing them. Maybe go over the stairs safety. My son isn't night potty trained yet either, just day, but we make sure everything is safe enough for him to leave his room at night and possibly wonder or come to our room. It's just their age, and it's time for all of that to happen.
