Startle reflex!

My LB (5wks old) has been having intense startle reflex most days since birth, some are fine and don’t bother him but some are so intense they scare him and he screams crying until I pick him up (I pick him up straight away). He does it while I’m changing his nappy, sometimes in his sleep (even when I hold him) and also when he is in his bouncer. Is anyone else’s LO doing this or done this and have some advice on how I can help him? I’ve googled it and spoke to the dr and both said it’s normal and healthy.

Mine did this it was so intense she would shake her hands in the hospital, nurse checked and just said keep an eye, literally day after she stopped shaking her hands but still have the relflex really strongly , she’s now 9 months and grew out of it! She sometimes wakes up now if there is really loud noise but I think anyone would be a bit startled!

@Katie louise thank you! Did she give any advice on how to help her? I feel so helpless when he does it, the only thing I can do is hold him and tell him I’m here xx

Not really no, i just did the same, if she was asleep and did I would just rub her belly and say I’m here or just pick her up if she was crying from it - they do grow out of it though! I’m not really sure when she did but I don’t think she had it when she was 3 months old! X

@Katie louise hoping he grows out of it soon 🤞🏼, glad your little girl is doing good 🥰 x

It’s called the Moro Reflex and all babies have it. It’s a survival mechanism and would actually be quite concerning if a baby didn’t have it. They grow out of it around 3-4 months x
