Baby will not open mouth wide enough!

My little one is 7 weeks old and she isn’t opening her mouth wide enough to get a deep latch. She’s gaining weight and although it’s not painful, it can be a bit uncomfortable during feeding. I’ve tried nipple to nose, dragging the njpple down the lips to encourage but she just chomps! Trying to do the shove of love at the right time is difficult! Any suggestions on techniques to help would be amazing please! I’m going to a breastfeeding support group on Friday but wondered if anyone else had experienced this? She did have her tongue tie cut at about 4 weeks old.

My midwife said make baby wait. Wait until mouth is wide enough. Take it away. They learn quick. She was right.

Thank you - I’ll try this. Although I imagine I’ll have more patience during the day. I don’t fancy trying this during night feeds when I’m half asleep and she’s hysterical 😫😅

Maybe a lip tie as well? They often go hand in hand. Different stretches or exercises might help as well, or bodywork.

I have the same issue minus the tongue tie and I was told to try bodywork.

My little one is 10 weeks and was tongue tied. It was horrendous breastfeeding her 😥. She has her tongue tie cut and everyone said how much it would improve but it didn’t improve that much. I think our problem is she doesn’t open her mouth wide enough. It’s getting better as she gets older so I’m hoping it’ll continue to improve. I was also told to let her get upset because that’s when she opens her mouth wide enough but it’s awful 😞 xxx

I had the same issue with my first and now with my second, both were gaining plenty of weight and I didn't find it painful, I wouldn't stress too much my 1st breastfed for over 2 years and my now 10 week old is starting to have a deeper latch more frequently, maybe you could try experiment with different positions? Both of mine seem to do well when I laid on my side, apparently the rugby hold is good for a deep latch as well 😊 with my 2 it seemed to be practice makes perfect so hang in there 😊
