Group B strep positive

I’ve had a call this morning from MAC to say a swab I had done last week is positive for Group B strep. It’s taken away the option of a homebirth which I couldn’t decide about so is probably helpful, but I’m wondering if anyone has had the antibiotics before and knows whether you need to let them know as soon as you’re contracting or only when your waters break? My last labour my waters didn’t go until I was pushing and I was hoping to stay at home to be comfortable for as long as possible this time but that seems now like it may not be an option… any advice is helpful 😊

When your having regular contractions, especially if it's your second baby, ideally they like the antibiotics in 4 hours before baby is born. I would ring them as soon as you think labour is starting so they have the heads up and they can give you advice over the phone

They normally don’t give them until your waters break but you need them within an hour. That’s what they’ve told me, as long as you’re ready to go in if they break I think you’ll be fine. They then will administer them throughout the labour

@Hannah they’ve told me that they will give them as soon as I go in and given my waters didn’t go until I was pushing last time, I didn’t know when they’d give them if my waters haven’t gone. So confusing!

@Sophie oh really? Perhaps different areas have different polices. My midwife’s have said it’s fine unless my waters break. Maybe speak with them and see if they’re happy for you to stay home longer? I’ve read that labours can be quicker if you stay home as you’re in your safe space and feel more relaxed and comfortable. Fingers crossed for you!
