Xanax and breastfeeding

Has anyone taken low dose Xanax while breastfeeding? I feel like that is the only thing that will help me at this point with my anxiety and help to take the edge off and hopefully get some sleep. I already have to supplement some with formula, so my baby isn’t exclusively breastfed. Any insight would be super helpful!

You can Google LactMed, infant risk, or E-Lactancia they are all databases that can tell you if the dose you are on is safe!

I would ask your pediatrician. But I would think if you have to take it, try taking it right after your last nursing feed before you switch to formula. That way by the time you nurse again hopefully it's been a few hours and has mostly passed through your system.

Have you tried cannabis instead of Xanax ? I would personally be more comfortable breastfeeding with cannabis in system vs Xanax

I’ve taken klonopin while breastfeeding and all was well.

Speak with your OB and the pediatrician. Don't use cannabis because it is potent in breast milk. My psychiatrist put me on setraline because very little goes in the breast milk.

@Robin I left a message with my OB but they have been out for a couple of weeks. I was on sertraline but my postpartum stuff was still bad so I recently switched to lexapro and still don’t see a big difference with that either

@Michelina I'm sorry you're going through his 😔 Is there another OB in the office you can speak to?
