Nursing and weaning

My 1 yr old is only nursing at night, which is before bed and during his wake-up windows which is sometimes once but mostly twice a night. I try giving him the pacifier but he just cries until I nurse him. I’m unsure if he’s hungry/thirsty and he goes right back to sleep once he nurses. What are you doing to wean your baby?

Have you tried giving him water or milk instead?

Not at night no. We haven’t introduced milk yet. He just had his 1 year visit on Friday (his birthday was Thursday). His ped did give us the go to start on solid milk but we are finishing his last can of formula off (kendamil toddler formula).

So I just took a class to learn how to wean and they said the hardest part is weaning at night. There is no right or wrong way and it does take time, but the trick is to distract and confort him/her with cuddles and other things like a teddy bear, water or milk. Eventually with time they’ll learn that there is no more breast milk … it’s so hard. My 1 yo is obsessed with my boobies. Good thing you are only doing it at night time, that’s a big win already.

The easiest way is probably to send daddy in to settle him. But another other option is to time feeds and cut in down by a few minutes every day.
