Cost to give birth

I’m currently raging against the machine of hospital corporations and insurance companies. I had an uncomplicated vaginal birth in April of 2024. I have supposedly “good” insurance because I work in government. The hospital bill we received was over $7,000 out of pocket. I am in Nashville, Tennessee. I want to know what everyone else has paid to make me feel better or worse and if this is normal. (The $7,000 number is NOT including the ~$2,000 out of pocket that was pregnancy stuff like labs and ultrasounds.) I feel like someone is ripping me off and I need to call and get it explained haha

I had Aetna in 2023 & got billed 400$ for an uncomplicated vaginal birth in Florida. I also didn't pay for a single prenatal appointment. To be fair we have to pay a butt load to just have good insurance 😭 We don't qualify for any state help.

Oh wow. My home birth cost less than that 😳 if I would have delivered in a hospital it would have cost me $200.

So I work for the state of TN and have BCBSTN. my vaginal birth in 2022 was about $1100 and this time I gave birth March 2024 and it was over $2000

My daughters in 2015 was $2500 but that was a C-section. This baby now that my husband sold his soul to the government is estimated $80 and we are in Kentucky

Also in Nashville with Cigna. Paid ~$2k for vaginal delivery. Most expensive item was anesthesia for epidural ($800).

I’m in TN now but was in CO last year where I gave birth. I was an employee at the hospital i birthed at, had their health insurance and was strongly encouraged to deliver there for best coverage. I delivered at 42 weeks, no complications whatsoever and in total have paid about 6k in bills. Epidural bill alone was 2.5k 😩

@Kassee I work for the state of TN too! But I have Cigna. It’s like Cigna equivalent of the BCBS (or so I thought.) thanks!

@Kiersa omg I have Cigna. Where did you go? My anesthesia cost $356 out of pocket, it was the doctors and facilities fees that was so dang much

@Megan what a shame! This whole system is so unsustainable

We paid nothing for prenatal visits & ultrasounds. My emergency C-section, low level nicu for 1 day and 4 days in the hospital was $2,300 (this was in Illinois we just moved here 6 months ago)

Hi. I don't know if you're interested in this but I highly recommend seeking a certified midwife in Tennessee. There are some amazing ones who will do way more for you than the hospital will including personalized post partum care for the same price and I think in Tennessee your insurance may cover some of it! Even if you give birth at the hospital a doula or midwife preferably will be able to support you guide you and help you before during and after birth. I ended up having to go to the hospital and have a traumatic emergency c-section and I would NEVER have gotten through it without my amazing midwives, one who is a certified nurse. I received aftercare for six weeks and was able to even have my 6 week check up and pap at home in the comfort of my own bed. Told my OBGYN and they were good with it. God bless them and the work they do. Just a thought 💙

@Lydia I gave birth at Ascension St Thomas Midtown. Where did you give birth?

Hey I’m in Nashville as well so feel free to reach out to me. You should have to pay your max out of pocket deductible whatever that is. I would definitely call insurance
