Maternity leave when you are unemployed

Hello ladies! I am thinking of quitting my job of 5 years as I’m studying nursing full time. I am looking to get pregnant next year and will be unemployed. Will I still get 20 paid weeks of maternity leave from the government and is it $750 per week? Thank you in advance ♥️♥️

No you have to work for at least one year prior to claiming maternity leave I even struggled to get mine approved because due to pregnancy complications I finished up work at 28 weeks pregnant

@Mikayla so that includes the government Centrelink payment?

You have to have worked 10 out of 13 months before your baby is born. So for example my baby is due September for me to claim I have to have worked at least 10 months since August 23 I think the equivalent of one day a week

Yeah the Centrelink payment is dependent on you having an income in the lead up to birth When you apply you have to provide evidence of all your hours and Income from either the past 2 or past 3 years can’t remember exactly how long the period was, had to state in there when you were planning on finishing work

As said above you will need to pass the 'work test' to get paid parental leave. Also FYI Centrelink is 100 days, max 90 per person if in a couple for this FY but it goes up next FY. The government will pay this to you directly if you don't have a job at the time. This FY it's $882.75 per week (before tax)
