DCF - Postive for Weed at Birth Connecticut

Both me and the baby tested positive for marijuana. Baby was completely healthy and had a smooth birth aside from some family stuff. They opened a DCF case and I had my first home visit before I even left the hospital to make sure I had a safe place to bring the baby home to with everything he needed. 3 visits later (Very quick, came in sat on the couch asked me a few questions. Then looked at the baby’s bassinet(or crib) each time she came). She said that the case would be closed after the initial month investigative period. Just sharing my story for any other moms who smoked during their pregnancy. While it was annoying and anxiety inducing. It went smooth and was over with quick. Just make sure you have your shit together.

I've always wondered how they went about this. I smoked, but not towards the end. I was terrified to go through what you did. Thank you for sharing. That aside, congrats, glad everyone is healthy and happy ✌️

@Ashley not OP but in my state they test you every pregnancy at least 2 times, once around the same time as the initial prenatal blood work & one at birth/appt before birth if possible. Plus if you test positive, they typically take the babies placenta to test that for drugs too.

@Ashley this is my 2nd pregnancy in Ohio & both times I was tested at initial blood work (1st pregnancy ended in loss so I didn’t have the birth test) & I was informed of these tests that were coming up too.

@Ashley it’s only legal medicinally (which I have my card for & have for years now, rec isn’t open yet) but yes my OB is fully aware of my smoking & is okay with it herself, it’s just standard protocol for testing & then dcs checking in after birth if still positive then too. My OB said it’s standard protocol because it’s not federally legal, but with my med card I’ll have an even easier time getting it over with.

@Ashley I was very open with my doctors. I am severely chronically ill and would not be able to function without it. I told my doctor from my first appointment and she informed me then that if me and the baby tested positive at birth(allegedly all babies and moms are tested) then it would be reported to DCF. The DCF worker did tell me that the case was less about the weed and more about the legal issues with my bd.

@Autumn I live in Connecticut. It’s legal recreationally and medically. I don’t have a medical card for financial reasons. But I do use medicinally I have multiple chronic illnesses.
