If you claim the 15/30 free hours at nursery but your nursery charges a top up fee for consumables, how much is it?

My daughter’s nursery is charging £24.50 top up fee from September for full days on funded hours. This seems a lot I thought so interested in what others charge. The all inclusive daily rate without free hours is £80 so the top up is 30% of that. My daughter is two so gets the 15 free hours currently since it was expanded in April. We spread across the year though so it works out as something like 8/9 hours free per week. She goes three days a week. I know the free hours scheme is badly underfunded, it’s just so rubbish that working families get absolutely shafted when it comes to childcare.

I signed my daughter up this week to start in September. They told me there will be a surcharge but are unsure 100% what it is yet but that it won’t be much. She will be doing 3 half days. My job isn’t the best paying anyway and I am only part time so hoping it’s not a lot

We’ve not been told about a surcharge but wouldn’t surprise me if is one 🥴

We went for a look around Best childcare on Chapeltown road and they’re charging around £54 for days where you use free hours, then I think it’s £84 for a full price day .. they said they spread the free hours over the whole year though so price is same every month instead of being more in term time

I’d ask them for a breakdown of what the extra charges are for as the gov website says “Nurseries are not allowed to charge top-up fees when providing the government funded hours offers, and that won’t change as these are expanded. Some providers may ask for charges in addition to the government-funded childcare, such as meals” I think the extra charges can also cover things like nappies but I can’t imagine that one child’s meals and nappies are going to come to £24.50 a day! https://educationhub.blog.gov.uk/2024/04/08/free-childcare-how-we-tackling-the-cost-of-childcare/

@Sophie Yeah I will. I expected additional fees to come into it at some point but thus just seems so steep! I mean the nappies they use from Asda cost about 10p each, wipes, nappy cream and food wouldn’t amount to £24.50 per day. Maybe they’re including things like art supplies or something but still struggling to justify £24.50! I wonder if they’re including utility costs in there.

My nursery charges £1.50 per hour per child for consumables.

We pay £11 for an 11 hour funded day x

It completely depends in the setting. Our nursery charges nothing on top of the funded hours but I know a local one would have charged us £250 a month for a 20 hour week all year around. Make sure to check your eligibility for tax-free childcare too. Could save you 20% on your fees

We pay £1 an hour so £10 a day for a 10 hour day. Our 3 year old has her hours spread over the whole year so does 2 full day at a cost of £86 a month xx

£24.50 for a day? We pay £46 per month. She only goes one day a week so roughly £11 a day. Her daily rate is just under £70
