study commitments are usually pretty intense, especially with going on placements where all your time has to be dedicated to those 1, 2 or 7 weeks of full time unpaid work as a pre-service teacher. Unless, however, you do study part time where you have less of an academic load or study online where you don’t have to attend uni for classes. I can’t speak much about Occupational Therapy but I know it would have maybe about the same study load, if not more as there is a lot of theory behind a health discipline. It is also quite competitive to get in with a high ranking needed, whereas with teaching there are some government grants/incentives to help you along the way. I am a primary teacher and I think the job is actually quite family friendly in terms of working hours. I get to school at 7, teach from 8-2:30, leave at 3 (those are my school hours). I must admit, teaching is not what it used to be, especially with this new generation of kids who aren’t disciplined at home and believe they so privileged. I find myself dealing with a lot of behaviour rather than the teaching itself but my school leadership team (inclusion team, deputy principal, principals, etc) are quite supportive in that sense. There is a lot behind the scenes that goes on within teaching, like the lesson planning, resource creation and the legal/administrative side, but this job is so rewarding and I believe it takes a certain kind of person who is extrinsically motivated to do this job.
