Support

I honestly think that there’s not enough support for single parents (especially those on UC). They are expected to follow a criteria that may not be reasonable for most of us. When we say we need support, we don’t mean go to baby groups or baby classes or just therapy! We need more !

Hey, what sort of support do you mean? What criteria?

I’ve been told that I need to find work but my son goes to nursery 2 days a week &I go to college one of them days so me looking for work would not work. I’ve looked for remote work but you either have to have experience in specific things or it’s only in the day time. I have also explained to them that I have no support from family or friends &they still expect me to work. Even though I am going college 1 day a week it’s not enough hours that I am spending at work. I have been told if I’m not following the criteria then they would stop my UC.

Ahh i see what you mean. Frick that is incredibly stressful. I'm not even sure how much daycare is for children nowadays... i have all this to come (mine is nearly 2) and i dread it. So i suppose that no job pays enough that you can cover childcare cost plus the rent you'd have to pay... it seems like a minefield! Won't they allow you to do 1 day at work and 1 at college?

That’s the thing, looking for work who would take me for just 1 days seems like the impossible. I’ve been out of work for 3years because I had my son &no dads around, no friends or much family, so I’ve been by myself. The last job I had I got made redundant because of Covid. If you are on UC they expect you to find work, you can get 15hrs free if you’re not working but when you are you can get 30 but that wouldn’t work for me. I am very lucky that my mum pays for the extra money for childcare for my son but that wouldn’t work because of how the nursery he goes to work because he’s in a private nursery.
