I have this same test on the 17th I don’t know what to expect 😂
I have mine tomorrow!😬 how long was you at the hospital for? X
@Ellie i was there for 2 hours! They do your bloods before they give you the drink, then you have to sit in the waiting room for 2 hours then they take another lot of bloods!x
I was nodding off while waiting for the 2 hours to be up 🤣
I have mine in 2 weeks, dreading it 😫 x
What week is this supposed to be done because I haven’t heard anything for my retest and I’m 25 weeks. And yes felt so horrible last time, sleepy and faint all day
Is this done at your 28 week appointment? X
@Hannah it’s done before the 28 week appointment. It’s a separate appointment x
@Maddie oh okay thank you! I don’t think I’ve been offered this but would like to be as I have all the symptoms (thrush, thirst lol)
@Hannah your midwife should book you in for it x. I’m pretty sure she pre booked mine about a month before my 28 week scan was due. I’d definitely email your midwife about getting one booked. But usually they only pre book it for you if anyone in your family have or had diabetes x
@Hannah I’m 27+4, but yeah, around 28 weeks! Only if you’re high risk though, or if you have the symptoms I think x
I think at 28 weeks they measure your bump each appointment and do some calculations and if it's big, they'll send you for a test. But if you've not been offered the test it's probably because your bmi is normal and no history of diabetes in family etc. I haven't been offered it but I have my 28 week appointment next week so will see if bump is proportional
Does everyone need this test? Xx
@Courtney no not unless showing signs or have family history / high bmi

@Chloe which is so stupid, because what causes gestational diabetes is the placenta's hormones physically changing the way the body process sugar. It has very little to do with diet, weight or even family history. I know 3 people who have had GD, and only one of them had a BMI over 30. One was tiny, vegetarian yoga instructor and the other was just what i would describe as average! I personally think its really poor that everyone isnt tested. My BMI was 29.6 this time and they didn't want to test me but i asked my midwife to up my weight at my booking appointment 😅 i would so much rather have the test and know i don't have it, than it go undiagnosed because i was 5lbs under the "cut off" threshold
I'm the same but my bmi was 26 at booking so not sure they'll test me, as I don't think I'm bump looks huge. Baby is measuring big though 98th percentile. Will see what they say next week!
@Kirsty sort of right, sort of not right.I don't think I'd ever feel comfortable as a regular person claiming any NICE guidelines are stupid 😬. It is far more likely you'd have GD if a close family member has T2. Same with BMI, also bearing in mind that the thresholds for GD are the same as being pre diabetic for the general population. Also, anyone not high risk is still monitored by testing for sugars and ketones in their urine which should be happening at each of your midwife appointments.
Ohhh yes. While it is a very important test, its a horrible one and i feel ill for the rest of the day. Can't wait for mine on the 22nd 🙃
