I had one too, you show up, they take your blood, give you a sweet syrup drink that is actually quite nice, then take your blood again 2 hours later. Just bring an iPad or a book or something for the wait.
If you like sweet sickly things like me you’ll be reet 😂, i was worried too but was totally fine xx
I was so nervous for this test but it’s not as bad as I thought. After the sugary drink I felt a bit nauseous but it was probably because I hadn’t eaten as you have to fast for the test, I just kept sipping water. But I wouldn’t say it was the worst, just boring sat there for the 2 hours
Had mine last week. Try not to worry too much. You go, have a fasting blood test and then they give you the sweet drink, mine tasted like concentrated ribena but it was not bad, just down it in a few sips. Dont stop to devour the taste. Once done, keep drinking water. 2 hours later, another blood test and you’re good to go - but i recommend to eat something first before leaving. Good luck
I haven't had to have it myself, but most people say it isn't super pleasant but not too bad! One of my friends really enjoyed it 🤣
I actually loved my sweet drink! It was raspberry flavoured and I joked with the nurse that if they carbonated it and added blue food colouring they could sell it as a soda in the states! I was nervous about getting hangry but had downloaded a good film so that took my mind off it :)
I had mine on Wednesday, i was the same and not looking forward to it but it was actually fine Berry flavour drink, first few mournfully are quite nice. But don’t shot it just sip it
Mine was very straightforward and nothing to worry about. Fasting, first blood test, sweet drink, then read a book for 2 hrs before having the 2nd blood test. Take snacks with you for afterwards! I had a banana pretty much as soon as I could! I still get nauseous when I get hungry but managed not to feel too bad throughout
How do you need to fast for?
I got mine on Monday 4th 9am
@Natalie from midnight till it’s all over at 11am
@Natalie mine was scheduled for 9am and I was told to fast from 9pm the night before. It's 12 hours they need l.
Thank you
I was told from 10pm the night before, but either way let's face it we're all in bed long before then anyway 😴 😅

I had mine two weeks ago! My appointment was 10am, and had to stop eating from 10pm the previous night. When I arrive, they took my blood, I then had the drink - It was almost like a sweet capri-sun! Then I sat for 2 hours - I took my laptop to catch up on work but it was very chilled. I then did another blood test, and then was allowed to leave. I was told if there was anything to worry about, they would contact me with 5 days but I had nothing, so all good! Best of luck x
I wouldn’t worry it’s such a boring appointment. I didn’t get my results back until a week later which was very late as they said I’d have it the next day. I’m high BMI and don’t have GD. The only thing I didn’t like is the bloods test but I’m a chicken when it comes to needles. At mine I got given a pouch of what I’d call nhs lucozade to down within 5 mins. Make sure your phone charged or you bring something to entertain you. Xx
Thanks all! Yeah probably the blood tests without any food that will be the worst bit! I’m very pathetic haha! Thanks for all the positive stories x
I was petrified of this test too. But actually it was ok. The drink they give, isn’t nice but instead of worrying / faffing with it, I just knocked it back, and then drank the water they provided thereafter to get rid of the test.
