Can your babies feed themselves?

My little girl will me 9 months in a couple of weeks. We've been following her lead with solids. She prefers to feed herself but isn't good at it. She struggled to use a spoon (puts it in her mouth backward) and is just very difficult in general. Wondering what others experience is with a kid this age.

My baby feeds herself sometimes but mostly with her hands. I’ve read that even if they use a spoon wrong though to let them keep doing it that way. It’s more about developing the motor skills right now I think than actually feeding themselves correctly. Like the grasping and pincer grab and then getting it to their mouth. Mine also uses her spoon backwards

Same, mine uses her spoon backwards, we actually got one that is dual sided and doubles as a teether too and she loves it... I'll post a Pic if I can find it online

Mine self feeds using her hands. She can kind of use a spoon but she eats way better with her hands and will clear her plate.

My oldest didn't use utensils until like 2 lol maybe a fork before that because he could stab things but definitely not a spoon.

@Stephanie , what do you feed her? We do a lot of purees which you can't really eat with your hands. Starting to introduce finger foods but am having a hard time thinking of things!

@Kristen we feed a variety. She eats eggs, avocado, raspberries, banana, toast, puffs, ground meat (turkey/beef/venison), boiled apples, cottage cheese, beans, soft steamed vegetables, rice, stew. Really as long as it’s soft…she gets it. And she doesn’t have any teeth. She completely stopped wanting puree as soon as we introduced real food

My baby is already 9 months old, and she doesn't use the spoon either. She doesn't like purees anymore, and she prefers small pieces of what we eat, but her pincer is not good yet. The pediatrician said she would get there and just kept letting her try.

My daughter used the numnum spoon. Easy and doesn’t matter which side is up or down.

With her fingers, yes, but not really with a spoon
