We had this happen. Please just RSVP. There is no reason necessary. It's either going to be yes or no. I had 3 moms texting reasons, and all I wanted to know was yes or no. We are all busy and lose track of time. Unless it's a sit-down dinner, 3+ kids won't matter.
As a hostess, I appreciate when people ask if it’s too late to rsvp. If it is, then it’s their responsibility to uninvite themselves. A good hostess will never tell someone not to come directly bc of a late rsvp For a casual kids party, I’m with @Shanee too. Only not if it’s like at an expensive play place or something
@Rosalie I appreciate your notes on proper hostess etiquette. However, answering the OPs question, I think a kids' party is an exception. My 5 year old had a party at an event space and 2 moms failed to RSVP by my given date. These were 2 kids my daughter wanted to celebrate with. I couldn't imagine telling them no because of a late RSVP. I just didn't have time for the reasoning why their RSVP was late. Thus, I am responding just RSVP. A couple extra slices of pizza and extra cupcakes that usually go to waste aren't a big deal. It's just my opinion as I've now hosted 6 birthday parties for my kids.
A lot of people won’t rsvp at all so it’s best to just rsvp!
My nieces birthday she had parents that didn't even rsvp which is annoying as she supplied party bags. Luckily she always packs extras. Then some did it the night before. You've still got aweek just text saying sorry just seen the invite such and such will or won't be there
Thanks all. Put my big girl pants on and text. Said we'd love to go but totally understand if we were too late and apologised. All sorted and we are going next weekend

I’d text and ask if it’s too late
