Not sure if you’ve tried letting her play with food, so she gets used to the texture. Once they’re better with texture on their hands, it can help with what they’ll put in their mouth. I used to just put a big towel down, and let my LO play with messy foods. He’s less fussy now. May not work but worth a try. You’re not doing anything wrong, some just take ages to grasp it! X
Just to let you know I am in the exact same position. I wanted to do BLW and he wouldn't put anything in his mouth, would just pick up and throw. It's been nearly 4 months of this. He also likes one flavour of puree but would only eat 1tsp maximum. We also get a lot of inconsistent information about it. Two HVs freaked out and said that he should be on three meals a day (since he was 8 months), a GP said it was fine until he's one as he is still getting all his nutrients through breast milk. A paediatrician said a similar thing to the GP and to definitely not keep insisting they eat if they're not interested as it can cause food aversions and as long as he is healthy and gaining weight, it isn't an issue at the moment. Another GP has suggested trying more purees if BLW isn't working (so I've tried some baby rice this week)... But I just really want BLW to work because even when feeding purees he won't actively want to eat it. I'm not too stressed about it yet but I feel your frustrations. 🌸
My baby refused purees from day 1, she also doesn't like to be fed. I would try the BLW approach & introduce veg, fruit &other bits for her to try. Just let her play with the food and explore. Unfortunately it does make more mess than purees BUT since doing this my LO has started to try more things recently. She still refuses purees lol which at first was really stressing me out too. But now she'll pick up some toast herself & eat it. She loves fruit so she has some fruit every day. And I try introduce a few new things a week like a new fish/veg etc. To make it easy for yourself do batch cooks of steamed veg/whatever you prepare & then give baby the same thing for lunch/dinner for a few days or every other day. At first I was trying something new every day &it's a lot of work plus stressful! So just minimise the work for yourself. The puree your daughter likes - what are the ingredients in there? My girl LOVES tomatoes so I've started to incorporate into some new things as she's more likely to try it.
What @Clara said is so true. Ultimately baby's main nutrition is still milk until 1. There is a recent obsession I find from HVs to push for 3 meals a day by this age - the NHS website doesn't help either (!) But a lot of holistic and other practitioners ie bf consultants will tell you its actually fine for babies not to having 3 meals a day. As long as you're exposing them to different foods and they're trying that's the most important thing. Most of the food my baby has ends up on the floor! Try not to worry too much x
This is my LOs latest Jackson Pollock after dinner
Just curious is she spoon fed or are you doing BLW? My LO has never refused any thing however he hasn't worked out he has to swallow the food - so everything goes into the mouth, moved about and then spat out again. He isnt interested in being spoon fed at all, he just wants to hold everything and squish it in his hands. I was getting super stressed about this but my HV reassured me it's all about sensory play at the moment, not calories, so I doesn't matter if he doesn't eat a thing. Just wondering if it's worth just keep offering different bits of food - even just to hold or play with might make it less stressful for you rather than focusing on intake?
