Not doing BLW

We started our weaning journey at 6 months and it is going well so far. We moved quickly from purees to mashes and my baby actually prefers textures. She has tried a wide range of veg, fruits, fish, meat, etc and we introduced the main allergens without any issues so far. We do a combination of baby feeding herself with a spoon and me feeding her and have recently started doing 3 meals (albeit tiny portions). Most of the meals are home cooked as she eats a version of what we eat (minus salt) and she really loves spices and herbs! We haven't tried finger foods (i.e. BLW) yet as I am really worried about her choking due to an earlier incident. I am aware of the difference between gagging and choking and have done basic first aid training. I am just not confident enough to give her finger food yet. Anyone else in the same boat as us?

Worth mentioning that the earlier incident didn't involve choking but gagging on an appropriatly prepared piece of fruit (I used the Solid Starts app for guidance), but we were at MIL's and she massively overreacted and put what I'd say is an irrational fear in my mind 😞

I’m exactly the same, I really wanted too but it made me too anxious. I have made peace with the fact it’s not for us right now, my twins are eating well and that’s all that matter to us at the moment. I feel like there is plenty of time to work toward BLW, which I think will be easy when they’re not so tiny and unaware

@Natalie thanks for replying, that's reassuring to know!

I'm not in the same boat, we've done BLW since the start, but just wanted to say it may be easier to start with things like melty sticks or baby wafers as they basically melt a bit like skips. The more BLW you offer, the more baby will learn to take appropriately sized bites etc. I also wanted to say to be aware that the Solid Starts app has some outdated guidance and goes based on age rather than stage. If baby is new to BLW at whatever age, food needs to be prepared for a beginner rather based on through age the app says. Check out 'Weaning the BLW way' on Facebook, they use information from world health bodies and organisations, there's a few other good Facebook groups too. I'd also avoid feeding baby solids around the MIL, and if she asks I'd be clear that her reaction to a completely normal gagging incident has caused you to hold back on offering baby finger foods so until you are confident in it more baby will not have solids around her.

@Carys all great advice - thanks! I actually know a couple of babies from our antenatal class who have choked on melty sticks (one required back slaps), so I'm more inclined to start with avocado and banana. And yes, won't be feeding baby around MIL as she has very dated ideas about raising babies in general (baby boomer!), but she does mean well.

Oh wow! Our LG munches on them no problem, I think the worst time she gagged was on something with ground brazil nuts as I think it was quite dry, but happily demolished the cucumber sticks next to it no issues. My Dad started off wanting to feed her and being worried (we live with him so he had no choice but to learn because I refused to faff about with puree/mash and spoon feeding her) and all these older gen ideas, he's technically from the generation before boomers. He's absolutely astounded at how well she eats now and knows that if I don't react to her gagging then all good but I do be overly happy/positive 'that's it, get it out, good job' to her but also as a slightly passive note to him that's she's all good haha. Easy peeler segments are good as they're quite juicy and baby will push out anything they can't handle, sometimes my LG will eat it all other times she'll spit out the membrane after mashing the juice out.

Exactly the same as long as they're getting nutrients and figured until she has teeth it's ok!
