purées/solids

mamas help me out here! my baby has been eating purées for a while now, but it feels like he isn’t progressing. anything we’ve tried with chunks or pieces in it he hates. we tried mashed potatoes and he spit them right back out🫠 he’s had purées but we haven’t tried baby cereal oddly enough. we haven’t tried most of the starting solids like pieces of pancakes or scrambled eggs. i’m starting to think it’s a texture issue but does anybody have recommendations on how to get him to start eating textured food? **pic so we don’t get lost :)**

You don't need baby cereal. Eating takes practice. As long as you're doing it everyday they will eventually get the hang of it. You could always start with puree and just slowly make it chunkier. (Not blend it as long). Mashed veggies with a fork.

I definitely agree! I have never done store bought purées, so I have lots of experience making baby food from scratch, feeding lots of veggies to my kids(I have two babies now) and I did baby led weaning this time, which is chunks of food, and they did fine. But I would suggest same, mash veggies, maybe even add milk to it for flavor, and find your baby new favorites, have you tried banana? You can mash that too to start with.

My dentist recommended a product called a Myo Menchie. It helps develop the muscles babies use to chew while promoting proper chewing. And you can put purées in it! I was so worried about choking when we started LG on solids but the menchie helped alleviate a lot of my anxiety and worked for us like a charm! Hope this helps mama🩷

It’s totally ok that they spit it out! That’s still practice! My kiddo eats just about anything and we did baby led weaning so he never did purees and some days he still spits stuff out. It’s not because he doesn’t like it. It’s just part of exploring what it’s like to have food in your mouth. If he feels insecure about being able to swallow something he’ll just spit it out too. It’s a protective mechanism. Just keep offering!
