is it a good idea to abolish the department of education?

Especially not a good idea when you say you’re leaving curriculum up to the state but if the curriculum doesn’t match your ideals you’ll just stop funding a public school.

What’s wrong with praying in schools?

I don't think it should be abolished, but it needs some extreme work. Part of me isn't that invested in the school system as my kids are being homeschooled, but it worries me more for the kids that my kids will be around in the world if the public education system continues to suck.

I think it serves Trump's right-wing agenda and will undermine social cohesion. It's a way of elbowing out any facts that don't fit the right wing frame. As they overlook Trumps crimes to get him in power, abolishing the education department will make it easier to overlook any aspects of history that are uncomfortable facts

@Tino well, for 1….. not everyone is a christian? i don’t want my kids forced to pray at school. im not bringing my children up religiously, so i dont want school time to be used to pray. they’re there to learn. not pray.

I am not for the privatization of education. I believe it should remain a public entity and not abolished. I don't believe prayer belongs in schools, due to respecting diverse religions.

I would really encourage people to look into the reasons why some public schools are “bad” in this country. And look at the way schools are funded. We just continue to fuel white supremacy with the way we fund schools in this country. Dismantling the department of education is certainly not the answer. Billions of dollars in funding for Title I schools could be lost, which will only serve to further disadvantage disadvantaged populations.

@luu🤎 I agree with you to some degree with the funding and stricter regulations. Only in that all of the money that should be going to the schools should be going into the schools to teach the things that are important like math and science and basic life skills. Those programs should be vastly better in the US. I think that some of our funding is lost on crap that should be nixed completely from schools or not focused on as much as it is. I also think the education system is already working the way they intend it to work. It explains why the poorer neighborhoods tend to have a less than stellar education and are generally also high in crime as well.

We are a title 1 district. It would be devastating to our district to lose that funding. We have a 10% homeless child population in my district and many families depend on things like free lunch and breakfast for all kids.

I’m a Christian and I don’t think prayer should be in school as that’s disrespectful to other religions. My fiancé is an agnostic atheist and I’m a Christian. We are raising my daughter Christian but freely to decide how she wants to go about her own religion. I would be devastated if my daughter felt Christianity was forced upon her. I know some won’t agree with that but I want my daughter respecting everyone’s belief. If I’m understanding correctly I feel history should be taught the same way not changed they try and hide to much already :/ It’s not a good idea I’m starting to think homeschool is my only option at this point

@Stephanie history is a very important thing to teach and i don’t see any of the republicans bringing it up. except what they DONT want taught. i think they’re , in a way, trying to downplay slavery and other conflicts we’ve had here so they can do the same things we should be learning from.

@GMF it’s a serious question because I live in the uk and a lot of schools here are religious and even non religious people send their kids there. Actually religious schools tend to perform better in exams. Of course people still have a choice of where they send their child but the question made it sound like religion in schools is so bad 😕

Title 1 in schools is AMAZING and honestly what every school should be. Although I teach at a private school we receive title 1 services because we serve primarily low income students and the services they get are what allow them to succeed. I just looked into this trump abolishing DOE. it looks like republicans have attempted this many times before? Apparently Reagan was the closest to actually doing it, and from what I’ve read it’s unlikely that trump will actually accomplish this since it requires approval from much more than just him. He can however make major reforms that aren’t great but he won’t be able to completely abolish DOE.

@Tino so the department of education in the US is the agency that oversees public education, not private. Of course there are some federal laws that apply to all schools across the board, but private and public schools are very different here. We have separation of church and state and freedom of religion. There is no place for prayer in public schools.

@luu🤎 it won’t be 4 years of poor education. The effects of closing the department of ed won’t be reversed just by reopening. Curriculum is already up to the states the federal government/department of education mandates state testing, special education, education research, and loans/ special funding programs. Once schools become privatized we’ll see all schools go for profit as educators demand to be paid their worth. Special education students will lose rights, no more student loans for college etc

Things like prayer are not that deep, it only becomes an issue if people make it. For example, I’m not from America, so the schools that I went to, on Fridays we start our day by gathering (assembly) and the whole school will have a prayer (2 minutes) teachers update us about how the week went or any announcements and we go to classes afterwards.. yes we did have different religions, but it was never an issue.. here every little thing becomes politics.

Okay I had a long response but then realized I miss read the question. So if you see a long response and then see that it got deleted that’s why lol I’m not sure on abolishing the department of education I would have to look more into that. As for praying in schools I just think that is worth a school board meeting. Let the school and the parents decide on it by voting on it. I think that would be best. I would vote yes but if most weren’t in favor I would not be mad.

@Om in many religions you’ll go to hell for acknowledging, praising, praying to another god. It would cause harm to force children from different religions to sin and it’ll be used to punish the minorities just like the pledge is currently used
