Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone knows about uc and if you start studying full time, do they close your claim?

if your studying as in university and are receiving student finance then yes they will close your claim x however in some cases they’ll keep it open and just reduce how much they pay you

For me when i studied they didnt pay me at all it was just student finance thar i got 🫤 it kinda worked out the same amount except that i also had to pay some money for childcare too

@Courtney thank you x

@Courtney hey may I ask why they stop paying you or closing your claim. is it because the university gives you finance and you have to cover your own food and rent , etc with that.

@Wida yes student finance is meant to cover rent and food so universal credit counts that’s as an income x

@Courtney but will that be enough. Say like the degree your studying is £9500. What about your own expenses like rent or food. Will they give you extra. Please if you can let me know. I’m thinking to study children’s nursing or adult in 2026.

They will close the claim if you have £0 paid to you 6 months in a row, usually they deduct ur student loan from ur uc, if you have facebook and join the students on universal credit page they should be able to help you with how much would be deducted if you know how much you’re getting from student loans x

@Courtney thank you.

@Wida okay so there’s 2 types of student loan. tuition and maintenance. tuition is the cost of the course which the government pays directly to the school and maintenance gets paid direct to you every 4ish months. the amount you get depends if your in london or not and if you live with your parents or not and how much your parents earn. in my case i lived in london away from my parent so i got the full amount loaned (13k a year) however im pretty sure that if you do a nursing degree your also qualify for nhs bursary (double check this as it might just be for midwifery) there are also other bursaries you may be eligible for since you have a child x

And childcare grant to help pay for nursery, it pays 85% a week of the fees, but usually up to a certain amount

i don’t think it’s posibile to leave with a child only on maintenance loan 😞

@Courtney so I roughly get around 1800 a month and I’ve got two kids £1800 includes obviously my rent as well with food and kids, et cetera so I don’t know. Do you think I would be able to study the degree? Will they help me. Thank you sis

@Wida you should still be able to study. they should still help as maintenance loan is not liveable off for one child let alone two x

It is possible, but it is very hard. I had to get a part time job (20 hours a week) to feel some financial relief, it did take time away from studying but it was 100% doable, you also can sometimes apply for hardship grants from universities directly which doesn’t have to be paid back, just make sure to check out all the funding and grants you would be eligible for because they really help x

@Courtney thank you so much for your help and time 🩷

You can study with the OU as they are considered part time regardless of the hours you take with them, so will always be under the threshold for benefits

@Shay yes I wanted that too, but you know they have changed it to Oxford which is outside London.

@Shay do you know why

@Shay xx

@Wida what has changed to Oxford?
