Childcare help/benefits - UK

I’m looking at being unemployed at the end of this year and wondering what, if any, help me and my partner would be entitled to with childcare. Our LO is in nursery 3 days a week from Jan and we’d budgeted with the 15hrs & tax free in mind but now with me being out of work then we lose this and it’ll double our nursery fees. Are there any other schemes out there to help us?

The only thing you’d possibly be entitled to is universal credit, depends on what your partner earns. If you are then you can also get 85% of childcare costs back. You can do a benefits calculator online that will let you know x

Is being unemployed a choice or are you looking your job? If it's by choice you'll be unlikely to get any help. You will still be able to use tax free though. If you are going to get another job you may be able to get someone help with childcare through UC

I thought the 15 hours was if both parents were working?

Yeah the funded hours are only if both parents are working, but definitely look into UC. Turn2us will calculate how much you may be eligible for. I don’t think you will be required to look for work on UC if your little one is under 3

You can get help from when your child is two if only one of you is working but your income has to be less than £15,500 a year which is very low. You won’t get any help with childcare unless you are both working. Or one of you is not working due to illness/disability that does not allow you to work.

@Toni both me & my husband are disabled but we don't get any help with our 2 year old. We have to wait until he is 3.

@Rachel your best bet would be to do a uc calculator where you can add your details and it will tell you what you are entitled too. If you put yourself as unemployed you will see what it is when you are not working

I haven't found anything. I've been made redundant so lost my job through no fault of my own but don't quality for any childcare help, universal credit etc.

Thanks all. I’ll take a look at UC but not sure I’ll qualify. Not unemployed by choice so hopefully will find something again soon 🤞🏼
