Open cups

Does your little one drink from an open cup? My son has straw cups for water and milk but no cup without a lid. I noticed on the 2 year review it’s one of the questions. How do you get them to use an open cup? I feel like my son will just drop it all over himself 😅

Yes but we hold it for her 😅 she made a lot of progress at the start -we started around 7m- but got to the point where she wanted to tip or throw it so we started holding it for her and just never really stopped🥲 recently she’s been grabbing it and trying to do it herself so we just hold the bottom, but she would usually rather us hold it so she can just drink and get on with her food lol I’ve seen people recommend trying it in the bath but my girl never had the patience for that😂 we just hold the bottom so she can’t fling it

@Lauryne I feel like I’ll have to do the same😂 my toddler is unhinged

@Nicole same here 🤣 I tried only putting a bit of water in the cup but she didn’t understand having to tip it right up so it was counterintuitive really, but obviously a full cup is just stressful 😂 we tried those 360 cups but she hated them because she couldn’t see the water and she just had no patience for them so i’d have to take the lid off and use it as an open cup anyway🤦🏼‍♀️ we’re still using the PandaEar weaning ones and they’ve got a good weight to the bottom so they don’t tip easily and they’re grippy, I would just try holding the bottom and letting him have a go x

Yes, nursery taught her

@Lauryne I will try this thank you!x

@Rachel my son isn’t due to start nursery until after the new year when I go back to work

@Nicole they used the Doidy cup to begin with, it’s slanted so they don’t have to tip the cup so far to get the water. My girl was just always picking up our glasses and wanting to drink from them. She would always tip it down herself to begin with, but after a while she got the hang of it.

We don’t at home because he just tips it out but apparently in nursery he does 🤷‍♀️

@Sophie I am hoping to introduce one before nursery but I suppose they’re encouraged by other children doing it too!

Yes but not all the time. We let him have an open cup with a meal so he is in a place where if he spills it all over himself it's an easy clean up. Lol

@Nicole yea, I’ve tried him but it’s just a nightmare at home. He uses his straw cup instead. They’ve not long started in nursery so when he starts doing it more I’ll try again and also when he understands better

My son can and does but when out and about and playing we have a straw cup x

@Natalia this will be the way forward I think 😂

My daughter drinks really great from an open cup, it only took a week to learn. She does just dump out the rest when she’s done tho so I can never put too much in!!!

@Katie a week is amazing! Hoping for the same as my son picks things up so quickly at the moment

@Nicole Yeah I just offered an open cup at every meal. At the start of the week she was putting her mouth on the wrong side of the cup and spilling it all down herself but I corrected that a couple of times then it was just about her learning to control the flow of the water

@Katie can totally see my son doing this 😅 I think I’ll try tomorrow!

We’ve started recently, we just put a small amount in the cup at a time. She has drank out of our drinks with our help before so I think she understands the concept mostly. Doesn’t stop her shaking the cup and throwing water everywhere at times! Just be prepared for spillages, have a tea towel handy!

@Chloe might need a bath towel 😂
