Is bankstown hospital maternity that bad?

I’m new to Sydney so I need to know if it’s really bad. Heard lots of mixed reviews. This is my second baby, in a new country and diagnosed with gestational diabetes for the first time. Nervous..

I was there throughout my first pregnancy and they seemed pretty solid for the most part. Is there anything in particular you would like to know?

@Paris yeah I’m just looking for reassurance that the staff are experienced and know how to take the right decisions. Hopefully they are not slow during emergencies and kind of know how to deal with complications?

The lead up to D day was great. I would recommend my midwife who helped me the whole way through. Unfortunately she wouldn’t be delivering though. Delivery time was a bit… interesting. My water broke on the Friday and they wanted to see how it progressed. Sunday l was eventually induced. Due to shift changes, I had gone through 3-4 midwives. Once in active labour, the midwife I had, in my opinion, felt either young or less experienced. She didn’t say much and wasn’t that warm or personable or provided any helpful advice or guidance. Once I was giving birth and the baby was coming, she was joined by an older midwife who was the complete opposite: helpful, gave great advice and encouragement. If it wasn’t for her, I would have been very anxious and scared. Once my baby was delivered, I was shipped to the next ward and it’s a little different there. The labour ward was really lovely. The maternity ward was a bit wild but that’s public health system for you. Some nurses were lovely.

Congrats on your pregnancy. My cousin had her first two babies at Bankstown hospital and did not have a pleasant experience; she talked me out of receiving care and delivering there. I think her negative experience was a combination of public hospital factors, the lack of continuity of care and lack of resources at the hospital at the time - some factors which exist within any public hospital for any provision of care. It may be a good hospital fit for you, depending on what type of care you desire in your pregnancy. I would say you ring their maternity clinic and ask all your questions to gauge whether or not this is the best option for you 🤍
