Starting solids?

I’m about to start my 6 month old on their solid food journey, any advice on what I should start with and whether pured pouches from the shop are good to use?

I follow thehappyfeedingcompany on IG and have also been recommended the book Baby-led weaning made easy by Sian Redford

The first thing to decide is if you want to do Baby Led Weaning (BLW) or purées (or a mix of both). Purées from the shops aren’t generally recommended as they contain more sugar than just plain vegetables/fruit (but some people find them easier). I would choose a couple of veggies (sweet potato, carrot, zucchini, potato) and steam them and then give them as chunks (BLW) or mash them up. Banana and yoghurt are also great to start with.

It’s best to make your own as the store bought ones are filled with other ingredients. However, I have found some brands like beechnut that have really good purées that don’t contain anything else. The only ones that might have a preservative are the fruits (fruits go bad quickly). But the preservative is like vitamin c (ascorbic acid). You can try things like avocados, bananas, peas, green beans, and carrots. Those were all hits with my little one.

I did textures. So every meal he’d have something solid, something lumpy and a puree and just let him go for it x

Make it yourself ideally, it doesn’t take long and then it’s all fresh! The Ella kitchen purple book is really good x
