We do a combination. Anything that should be spoon fed we either feed her, place the spoon in her hand or on her tray. Things like porridge or rice dishes. Anything that you would naturally pick up we just place in front of her. My only advice would be to not place a full plate of food in front of your LO. She wouldn’t touch anything if presented this way at first. We would place one thing on her tray and then have a conversation, sing along to the radio or just potter around the kitchen. Eventually she tried it because there was no pressure on her I think. Although I love to cook, we didn’t over complicate things especially at first. The most I cooked for her was cheese & broccoli croquettes. We didn’t do any fancy. She’s amazing now she can use her pincher grasp and gets excited when you bring her favourite foods.
Especially at lunchtime it’s whole foods like cucumber rounds, omelette strips, banana strips, a cooked broccoli or cauliflower floret, a whole strawberry. We offer toast with cream cheese and pork loin (much less salt than ham) or pasta with cream cheese & broccoli. So you’re not cooking every night, I batch cooked a mince base with chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and grated carrot. I serve this either with pasta as a bolognese, add peas as a savoury mince and serve with mash or add a few beans as a ‘chilli’ and serve with rice.
I downloaded the baby led weaning cookbook app. It’s really good, loads of recipes and ideas and serving suggestions for babies age! X
