Make sure you test immediately after waking, before you do anything like showering. Do wash your hands with soap and water before testing, that influences your reading greatly
I had this a couple of mornings I wasn't feeling great. I made sure to drink lots of water and walk around a little bit before having breakfast and it came down. My target is 5.3 or below so I wasn't too worried but just made sure to have a breakfast I tolerate better those mornings
Depends how far along you are- they say it gets harder to manage fasting reads around 32 weeks. I had a few high fasting reads 5.4 but it was because I was poorly. I did ring the diabetes clinic who said only to be worried and ring in when I have 3 high fasting reads in a row x
@Kathryn I don’t know as this is the first one I’ve done. Only had my kit since yesterday so I’m not too sure and midwives aren’t in on weekends for me to ask 😩
@Dominique how do you get yours so good everytime? Last night after dinner I had a good reading which is why all of this is so confusing to me. Yep, done one as I woke up and washed my hands too
@Jayne I don’t feel great but only because I feel a cold coming but apart from that I feel fine. I don’t know whether to have yoghurt or eggs and beans on toast. It’s all new to me
@Molli im 25 weeks. They explained over the phone but it was a quick call, id rather actually see someone in person but not sure if they do this x
Ah all my appointments are phone calls. My reads are sent direct to the midwife and then they review them and we discuss diet changes ect if needed x
Mine use to be 5.5-6 in the mornings when I was pregnant, there wasn’t anything I could do as soon as I started eating it levelled out. I ended up being put on insulin at night before bed to bring it down, I wouldn’t worry to much they will monitor it with you x
The first few weeks I was asked to test, I ate like I normally would to see what impacts my readings 😅 I have the same breakfast every morning, porridge and black/blue berries It highly depends on if I snack after dinner, and what time I eat. I generally eat quite late in the evening. If my post dinner reading is more than 7 I don't snack, if its around 6 I would lol. Doesn't work for everyone tho!
What you drink also impacts your readings BTW. I drink ice water with a splash of sugar free squash, but fruit juice and sodas send me.

@Casey the insulin is what im scared about 😩 I just want a healthy baby, all of this worries me so much! X
@Dominique do you make your porridge with water? I usually eat quite late myself, it was nearly 10pm when we finished last night but my reading was on target. I would normally drink fizzy water, fruit juices or sometimes a fizzy lemonade but since yesterday im sticking to water x

The other thing I've been told helps is having a 20 min walk around the block after dinner
Just see it this way, your placenta is currently struggling to process glucose the way it should. 5. 4 isn't super high, some women have 6 + and even if it was high, it's treatable. Metformin and insulin are to help, it's not a punishment 😊
@Dominique thank you lovely x
Good luck! You got this!
Oh colds definitely increase your blood sugar! You might have abnormally high readings when you are ill. I had it when I had a cold. All my blood sugar readings were HIGH but went back to normal once my cold disappeared
@Dominique 💖💖
@Maaham ohh no way, that’ll most likely explain why then! I was fine yesterday and readings were okay and then felt really bunged up during the night and a sore throat
Yeah I know what you mean it scared me too, but my baby is now 8 weeks and she was perfectly healthy all her levels were normal, and my readings were high for ages xx
The morning reading is linked to the hormones your placenta releases overnight, it’s the hardest one to control. I wouldn’t worry about 5.4, I’ve had a few high readings in the morning. Just try to eat well throughout the day and they’ll level out ☺️
Try after your last snack a glass of water and put 1 little spoon of apple cider vinegar, since I’ve tried this I had all my fasting levels below 5 🙂 hope this helps xX
What is yours meant to be when you first wake up? That’s seems like a reasonably good reading but everyone’s is generally different
