Languages

What is your strategy to teach your kids all the languages you want them to know? I'm Palestinian, born in Germany, so I want my baby to learn both Arabic and German. My husband is Italian. The language we both use to communicate with each other is Italian. Before my baby is born I'd like to have a strategy. Dad and family time will be in Italian, but I'm not sure how/when to switch between Arabic and German when I'm alone with my baby. Any ideas?

My husband is Chinese and I’m fluent in French and Russian. For now he speaks only Chinese around the house to the kids and I speak only English. Once they seem to understand those two I’ll start one of my languages while he sticks with either Chinese or English. And then so on for my other one. By the time they get to high school, they should be able to understand all four languages. I also play YouTube videos similar to Ms. Rachel but in other ethnicities. For instance, for Chinese, baobei Chinese. My husband calls her the Chinese Ms. Rachel lol

Also I picked English because everyone in my family either speaks English or Spanish (I’m Puerto Rican), but all can understand English

@Mohannahas I'd be afraid that it will be too late to properly learn the sounds of the languages or that the languages they learn later will not develop as much if I wait until they understand two languages. Also because if they already established the habit to communicate in a specific language, it might be harder to change that. This might be an option for languages that I speak (like English and Spanish) but that are not related to family or origin, as they are not a priority.

@Meis as long as they are under the age of like four or five, they’ll pick up anything very easily. Ik someone who’s baby didn’t start to learn another language until they were like 2 and she’s picking it up well. It’ll definitely be slower than the original two languages but since one of us is saying it in a language they know, they’ll be able to understand what the other is saying. You just gotta stick with it

@Mohannahas Thank you for your advice! 😊
