Panicking massively

I’ve been making my bottles wrong and no one has corrected me! HV has seen me prepare bottle and not corrected me! So I’ve been boiling the kettle and putting water into bottles and using the water when at room temp! But someone said it’s not supposed to be used like that and i should be doing the hot shot method!!

Follow the instructions on the tin 😊

I’m sure if the HV saw you and said nothing it’s fine no?

Room temperature doesn’t kill the bacteria in formula therefore it’s dangerous, the NHS guidelines recommends leaving the boiled water for 30 mins then adding the formula and either using cold water to cool the bottle down or putting it in the fridge. It’s why HVs don’t recommend prep machines as the hot shot isn’t always hot enough x

I boil the kettle pour it into a jug and probably wait 10-15 mins before making the bottles. I know NHS says 30 mins but I’ve waited that long before and it just doesn’t feel hot enough for me 😂 if I need a bottle instantly I use the Nuby rapid cool, but I make bottles up and store in the fridge to warm up when needed xx

This is probably wrong too but I used to do half the bottle straight out the kettle, give it a good shake and top up with cooled boiled water from my flask so he could drink it straight away.

So basically I hadn’t been sterilising the formula cause I had the water less than 70 degrees Celsius. But was never corrected it was a friend of mine that said I hadn’t been doing it right and if it wasn’t for her I’d have carried on doing it wrong! Think it’s really bad that I was never corrected and this could have affected my newborn baby as the formula wasn’t sterile and I’ve been doing this for 4 weeks!

I boil the kettle, put the water in a large flask and let it cool for 30min before closing it. I personally find it much easier that way so whenever I need to make a bottle I just pour the water from the flask and add formula.

That's how it used to be done years ago.... I remember watching my nephews for my sister and I had to boil kettle pour into bottles add the formula and let cool and they were kept in fridge then re heated in the bottle warmer. 🤣 I know people now would be like ahh but that's generally how it used to be done and one is now 26 and the other 16 and doing fine. lol xxx

I’ve been doing this for 2 years & my little girl is fine! You do you xx

@Adelle you been adding it to a flask and then using it throughout the day?

@Eline I’ve been doing the same just using water out of flask throughout the day but some have said the water might not be hot enough to sterilise the formula as the day goes by

The way I do it is working for my daughter with no issues so I'm not gonna fix what's not broken tbh. I always refill it again with freshly boiled water at least once or twice a day when I notice the water is almost finishing so it's more or less always a decent temp whenever I'm making a bottle. Even then I still wouldn't change anything about how I'm doing it.

I just leave all my bottles on the side with the lids off, with boiled water in- then use them at room temp with formula added when I need it xx

My tin says use room temperature boiled water so 🤷

@Sara I think different countries have different formula preparation methods. I believe the person posting is in the UK? And the formula here is not sterile therefore has to be prepared with 70 degree water to kill the bacteria in it which is why the formula can’t be added to room temp boiled water. Unfortunately we have to consider all of this when we go out and about and how we are going to prepare bottles, we have all kinds of contraptions to help with bottle prep over here 🙃

The problem with formula is the microbes living in it that can cause foodborne illness. Yes, you may have been doing it wrong but you would know if it had affected your baby. They are either just fine or they're not. It's a roll of the dice. Do it the correct way from now on but don't worry about how you've handled it in the past, or stress that you might have done something to harm baby. You would know if you had because they would not be just fine.

@Hannah fair enough. Thanks for explaining that. I was wondering, why the panic when that's what mine actually says to do.

@Melissa thank you luckily she’s been fine, so definitely like you said just got to learn from it now and do it correctly

When i stopped breast feeding and went onto formula inused to boil kettle and put it in the flask so was hot each time i needed to do a bottle, now shes on 2 bottles morning and bed time i boil kettle and put it straight in the bottle and add the formula and let it cool down untill shes ready to have it, shes 11 months old and doing perfectly fine!
