Changing my son’s last name.

My son has his dad’s last name. I left after years of back-and-forth and abuse. I want to double-barrel his last name so that he also has the same last name as me. I don’t want to remove his dad’s last name. His dad probably won’t agree to this, as I have asked before. If he doesn’t, I will apply for court. Which surname goes first? Does it matter? Is there any difference in which name is first or second?

I believe it does not matter. I personally want to double barrel and will go with whatever sounds best. Also, if you haven't already. Get that abuse reported under Claire's Law

@Samantha to file it under Clare’s Law, I would have to make a statement. I have already spoken to the police and put it onto their record that I’ve done a DASH assessment with them and they’ve written their observations. They’ve referred me to other places to get help and things done, but I don’t want to make a statement because it would mean taking it further and I don’t want to cause more issues than I already have. The evidence is from a while back, so they’d simply just interview him and let him go, so he would then be home and ready to make life hell for me.

I've filed under Claire's law without making a statement. Have a crime reference number from police. I was told making a statement is optional, but I am going to do so. I'm waiting for them to get in touch regarding one.

@Samantha ah, how did you do this?

I'm sure I'm googled Claire's Law, and applied via the met police. They then sent it to West Midlands Police who are dealing with it. I had to fill out a lot of information regarding what had gone on, it took them a while to get back to me but they're helping me a lot now

@Samantha did they make him aware of this? Did he have to be interviewed? I am unsure on how this works because that means anyone can make a CL on anybody. Surely they have to interview them first & get their side/evidence etc.

As far as I'm aware, he does not know. I'm still waiting an officer to get back to me as I opted to make a statement, but this is something I can ask

I’m going through the same thing with my ex I’ve had to go to court he refused to consent. Just put your surname first then his at The end most of the time they will only use the first part of the double barrel when referring to him
