Newborn startled

Has anyones baby startled like mine does? Its the second time it happens when I put my newborn on the bed’s surface which is soft, he suddenly stretches his arms and legs like a star, becomes very tense and red and looks very distressed. Its like he gets startled because he loses balance of his body or something similar. In the moment it looks very scary but he settles when I pick him up.
