Paid family leave

Hi , does anybody know when I should apply for paid family leave through EDD ?. Do I need to wait till the baby is born to do it or can I do it now ?. I was trying to do it now but after reading the information that they are requesting it seems that the baby needs to be born first .

You can apply for pregnancy disability leave 4 weeks prior to estimated due date. For paid family leave, you can apply for it within 12 months of baby born. One can take it as a continuous block of time or intermittently. Some people choose to take PFL right after pregnancy disability as a continuation, for that you’d have to wait til pregnancy disability leave ends before applying for paid family leave.

@Winnie am I able to do it being unemployed, I was employed but had to temporarily resign due to pregnancy and other factors recently.

Good question I am not sure…

@Winnie I just looked it up , I believe I can since being unemployed is considered “disabled “ so is pregnancy I believe it said . Thank you for you help !!

@Kourt I am also unemployed and applied for the disability 4 weeks before due date. Once you do that, it should tell you in EDD but I believe they automatically start you on PFL once the 4 weeks is up you don't have to apply again separately

You apply for SDI first which if it’s vaginal birth it’s for 6 weeks and you doctor needs the receipt number to fill out their portion. It’s 8 weeks for c-section and you apply the first day of leave. After that’s up you apply for PFL after your last day of Disability (SDI). Your employer should give you details. This how it’s done in CA.

Is you left work you can apply for disability. When is your due date?

@Amber officially aug 22 . Who would be my authorized physician/ practitioner my obgyn correct ?

I would wait till the day you deliver to submit if you’re unemployed since it only covers 10-12 weeks. Did you leave work cause you’re high risk? And yes that would be your OBGYN. If you need help filling anything out I’d be more than happy to help.

@Kourt apply for state disabilitY NOT PFL. PFL is to bond with baby.

@Amber I was a caregiver , and part of that means getting to people home so since I don’t have transportation of my own it became hard to do that on top of being pregnant it was hard to would with clients the bigger I got . So my boss and I decided it was best to temporarily resign till I’m capable of doing the job again .

@Gabby yeah I did the state disability and called my obgyn , turns out they have the paperwork in person so they told me to just bring in the receipt number and fill it out there for the doctor to sign off for me

After that I believe I will be able to switch over to the pfl once the baby gets here and the state disability runs it course. So fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly lol !

Yes yes, I’m glad they where able to tell you what to do. I know EDD can be a pain in the butt. What I do is call after a week and a half since they aren’t always quick about processing. And they always process all of my stuff while I’m on the phone. Cause both times I’ve almost gone without pay for over a month.

@Amber oh ok yah I will do that

@Kourt yes. Use the disability as much as you can. After baby is born you get either 6-8weeks depending on your baby’s birth and then at your 6 week post op. Ask your OB to extend it….
