D&C three days ago, how long before HCG is gone?

Hiya, I had a D&C three days ago at 8 weeks pregnant. There was no heartbeat at our scan but no sign of my body miscarrying by itself. I’ve just done a pregnancy test and I got a very solid line. My doctor says I can’t start a new cycle until HCG has gone (they aren’t waiting for my period, only HCG). Does anyone have any idea roughly? 💓

Mine took around 10 days and took approx 5 weeks for my cycle to restart. I would recommend waiting a cycle to try again x

I think it can take up to three weeks for it to clear from your system.

Thank you @Emily @Sharon i really appreciate your insight. May o ask how far along in it pregnancy you were? I’m assuming the further along the longer it might take? The fertility doctor said they wouldn’t wait for a period but maybe they will wait for HCG to leave my system. Xx

I've had two now. One at 6 weeks and one at 7& 1/2. I felt the time to wait a cycle was good for me mentally. Time to process. 2nd for me was Late January and I've just now got a positive test 5 months later!!

I thought I was 12 weeks, but I had a MMC at 9.5 weeks. They told me to test three weeks after my D&C and to let them know if it was positive. I had the faintest line after 3 weeks so they did a blood test which came back as basically clear (they wanted 5 or less and I was a 6). My period turned up exactly four weeks after the D&C. It was an IVF baby, so I needed to wait two cycles before I could try again (although it actually ended up being longer for various reasons and tbh I kinda needed that time to get my head straight).

@Emily Emily! Congratulations! That’s such wonderful news! I’m so happy for you. And it’s so nice of you having feed through all this and now pregnant to take your time helping others.

@Sharon I’m so pleased you could take the time to heal. I do wonder what they will do with my HCG levels really. I’m waiting to hear from the doctor. They said we won’t be waiting for a period, just for the bleeding to stop but I haven’t bled at all. Not a thing. I’m wondering if they have totally missed the target! If they give me fertility drugs to start my follicle phase to do ovulation induction in a few weeks, if the HCG doesn’t come down and they need to do another D&C I’ll have wasted a lot of drugs and money.

You’re only a couple of days down, so your body is still flooded with HCG. It is going to take a little while for your body to realise you’re not pregnant anymore, so try to be patient with it. Don’t worry about bleeding - I barely had any after my D&C. They might wanna wait until your cycle settles before giving you fertility drugs, but it depends on the individual policy of your clinic. I know very well that urge to get back on the horse and try again, but if you do end up having to wait a month or two it won’t be the worst thing in the world. There’s no rushing the healing process, it is going to take a little time so just go easy on yourself. ❤️

@Sharon I’m cool with whatever my body needs but the clinic have said they aren’t waiting for my period, that we are moving forward. So I’m just wondering how that ties in to HCG and making sure nothing is left as of the crack on before HCG is clear I risk wasting the time, drugs and money on a cycle that won’t be completed. Sorry if I didn’t explain that very well earlier.

Hmmn… yeah, that’s a little odd. Like I said, the hospital where I had mine wanted me to wait until I had a clear test in order to be sure I didn’t have RPOC. Maybe speak to yours about your concerns - there’s no need to rush anything.

@Sharon I’ll see what they say, I am thinking that the three week wait for HCG to leave will be before my period so they could start then once I’m clear. I imagine that’s their plan thinking about it. It’s best to make sure everything has gone. Xx

I was 8 weeks too and it took three weeks and a few days for me

As for what your doctor has advised, I'd say thats pretty normal. There's no medical reason to wait for your next period if you don't want to. I was told you wouldn't get a negative test unless everything was gone.

@Robyn thank you for sharing your experience Robyn. I’m so sorry for your loss too, it’s such an awful thing to go through. I had surgery almost a week ago so fingers crossed it’s two weeks to go and we can start a follicle phase. I’d like to see HCG gone first so we know everything is safe and quiet before we begin. I really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you. And to everyone else again, you ladies are my inspiration. X

A little late to this. I miscarried just before 8 weeks and it took just under 8 weeks to get to zero. I had complaints that it was taking too long and was told it is normal. I ended up having retained tissue and needed to surgically have the tissue removed. I was at zero within a few days but I was already close to zero before the surgery.

@Kelcie that sounds so tough. I’ve really been hearing such mixed stories and I can’t believe what some have to through. It’s hard enough already. Thank you for sharing your experience. I have tested today 11 days post D&C as I need to also ovulation track asap so I don’t miss an egg. You can technically get your period with in 4 weeks of a D&C. I had a line still on a pregnancy test albeit lighter than it was 9 days ago when I last tested. I hope it continues and I don’t need follow up surgery. 🙏🏼
