Reducing milk feeds

When/how did you reduce LO’s milk feeds? We had the 10-12 month review this week and the HV said by 12 months he should be on 2 feeds a day. He’s combi fed and currently has 5-9 feeds per day, fed on demand mostly although does have mealtimes when we offer solids and water most days. I just can’t see how we’re meant to go from this to only 2 in a month (he’s 11 months this weekend).

Is he over weight?

@Gemma no, he’s on the smaller side but no concerns about his weight

Are all those breast milk (combi bottle and yourself), or mixture with formula? And if so, how many are of each? X

@Philippa personally I wouldn’t worry to much as he’s telling you what he needs and he’s not over weight nor severely underweight if you are wanting to reduce the milk slowly when he asks for a bottle try and offer a different of snacks instead of giving the bottle it may be a way of soothing does he suck a dummy or thumb ? Some babies like the succle affect of a teat xx

My baby is EBF and I was given virtually the same advice. I posted it on here and after some really great responses, I have chosen to ignore the HV. Babies can’t manipulate you and won’t eat more than they need. If your baby is happy, gaining weight, plenty of wet & dirty nappies, I would continue to follow your baby’s feeding cues and do what you’re already doing. You know your baby best!

Our 8 month old has 3 8oz bottles a day. He was having 5 6oz ones a day and dropped one when I started weaning him and dropped the second one when I started giving him dinner. He has one when he gets up, his breakfast 2-3 hours later, lunchtime bottle about 12.30/1pm, dinner about 4 and his bedtime bottle at half 6. The GP said I was over feeding him when he was having 5 6oz bottles but the HV said it was fine. Your LO is telling you what he wants and if he is fine weight wise try giving him more snacks in between meals and dropping a bottle in between x

I would take what she said with a pinch of salt, my 14month old still has 3 8oz bottles (first thing, before nap, bedtime) and if he’s refused food all day I’ll do one in the afternoon as well (whole cows milk) I kind of thought breastmilk didn’t really count as people can breastfeed for years. They will naturally start drinking less as they eat more solid foods so it will be a natural decrease. I’ve def never been told 2 only after 12months!

My 15 month old still nurses 3-4 times a day. She's a great eater, too. and our pediatrician has never had any converns. I honestly wouldn't worry about it that much.
