Levels way too high after healthy food

I am so stressed having been diagnosed with GD only a few days ago at 29 weeks. I could not even get any blood before breakfast after trying 25 times! My fingers are sore. I decided to eat and had salad with tuna and nothing else and then tested 1 and a half hour later. Success with getting blood this time round but i got 11.8 and that's all I've eaten! I don't know what else to cut down on I'm so confused and deflated.......

Echoing what Chrissy said. Deep breaths. I’ve had GD twice now. This is not your fault, it’s nothing you are doing wrong💕 I think in this case you probably need to add a bit of protein to your meal, have a look on Gestational Diabetes UK website it’s a Godsend x

Did you have tomatoes in your salad by any chance? It’s just finding what affects you as everyone’s tolerance for certain foods is different but once you learn more about what you can tolerate and what you can’t tolerate it gets “easier”. But I do know tomatoes can spike blood sugars x

Have you looked up tips for getting blood? I know running your hands under warm water and shaking your hands is supposed to help.

@Chrissy thank you, I will try that. I honestly feel like I'm constantly failing and worry about my baby.

@Amy thank you I will take a look. I have trouble figuring out what to even eat that keeps me full.

@Nire I had no tomatoes just plain baby leaf salad and a tin of tuna. Nothing else. I will look more into it. X

@Christina now I know to keep my hands warm and keep the blood flowing. I will try later and see if that helps. Thanks x

Pairing foods together helped me ie protein and fats etc

@Chrissy I have sent you a private message. Thanks so much

Drinks are also difficult too. Drinking water just doesn't satisfy me as I am not a water drinker! I like fruit juices! Can't figure out what to swap it for!

With you saying you like fruit juices, what did you drink alongside your salad? Breakfast for me is the hardest meal to stay within range after. It may be that diet control just doesn’t work for you and you need some medication to bring it under control. It was the same for me. My numbers were like yours and they never even tried diet control with me,I went straight on metformin and insulin. Don’t beat yourself up,it’s nothing you’ve done, it’s just your body’s insulin production changing because of the pregnancy but they’ll get it under control, keep in touch with your diabetes team. My meds get upped at least once a week! They’re constantly changing

@Sarah I just had water with the breakfast and all day have had just that. Can I tey drinking no added squash to my water? Would that be okay. I forgot to mention i have needle phobia is am so scared of having to use insulin and I have sinus tachycardia so my heart rate jumps up when stressed and can onset serious health issues if not controlled, I can't take my regular medication to control my heart rate due to pregnancy so I fear the thought of needles will send me into shock. Does the insulin hurt alot?

The insulin needle is absolutely nothing I promise you! Is about 4mm long and TINY! (From someone who had a massive needle phobia before pregnancy!) they would try metformin tablets before insulin anyway I think. I actually take blood thinning injections twice daily too and the needle is about 12mm and wayyyyy worse. The insulin one honestly is nothing.

You have to eat carbs. If you can't manage levels whilst being able to eat some amount of carb you should speak to your diabetic team about going on meds. You need carbs for energy! It's not failing if you do need to go on meds at all - some people have a harder time managing GD levels than others not by their own fault.

@Sarah Thank you for the reassurance! It helps alot.

@Jess thanks yes, I think i am feeling weaker due to not having any carbs i will incorporate this in my diet along side the protein and see how it goes.
