@Maizie how did they diagnose your little one with milk allergy if you don't mind me asking? I think we're going through the same thing with my little girl who's 8 weeks, got a GP appt this afternoon so just wanted to see what to ask/expect. I exclusively breast feed too and have cut out dairy and soy since 2 days ago just in case, which I'll be honest, hasn't left with me with a lot of options to eat, but mainly because haven't been had a chance to get some groceries 😅 I get how you're feeling as given the choice I'm not sure what I'd do, if I can continue to breast feed I'd love to.
We are in the exact same boat and I decided to cut out the dairy (first I cut it out for 2 weeks then reintroduced it just to verify that it was in fact CMPA). I’ve been off it completely other than that one day of reintroduction for over a month now and it is HARD. Luckily my husband cooks so he’s been amazing at feeding me well at home, and it’s no problem putting alternative milk in my coffee, but I’m finding lack of snacks and going out to eat really difficult. I’m not a vegetarian and the vegan option on a menu is typically the last thing I’d order, and it’s usually the only thing I can have now. I had to bottle feed my first, exclusively expressed bc he never latched then combi, and I decided this is just slightly better than having to worry about making sure I have milk for her every time we leave the house, making up formula, sterilizing, etc.
Btw if you do combi feed with breast milk and non dairy formula you would still have to cut out the dairy 100%. So it’s really a choice between one or the other
My little girl has allergies too. I exclusively breastfeed and it can be hard to cut out the allergens but to me (complete personal preference) I’d rather stick at breastfeeding her. I’ve found it get much easier the more I shop. But totally support if you find it too tricky and want to formula feed! Xx
Just to warn you the allergy formulas smell and probably taste gross and are sometimes hard to get hold of x
What symptoms made you go to GP to think she has milk allergy and what week?
@Arishah yes they did at the doctors. i went in and said i think it’s a milk allergy, said her symptoms and a photo of her poo (all mucusy) and they agreed
@Jhuvilyn she wiggles and giggles on the boob but not in a rooting way. more of a frustration and she’ll cry in between suckles. it’s like she doesn’t want the milk but she was starving so gave in. it would take 40 mins to feed her but only about 15 of that she was actually feeding, she hadn’t pooped in 3 days which is just not like her and then when she did it had curdles (not grit but curdles like in spit up - also not normal for her) it was also mucusy like snot.
@Jhuvilyn she’s 10 weeks and it all happened over the last week
So update... the GP was complete waste of time! They said as long as she's gaining weight and there's no red flags, the mucusy stools could just be normal when breastfeeding and "I could give cutting out dairy a go and see what happens "🙄 So frustrating when you know as a mum there's something not quite right! @Allie @Leah did you cut out soy too or only dairy? What kind of meals/things do you eat during the day? And when did you start to see a difference in your LO's? Sorry for all the questions!
No worries lovely! Honestly, the GP was no help for me either. My little girl had an awful awful rash all over and they told me it was baby acne. My gut instincts told me it was a milk allergy so I cut dairy out. Her skin improved massively back to normal but was still having some bad nappies so I cut soya out too at that point of being completely dairy free. I go for the free from range in supermarkets and it’s amazing how much of a variety there is now! X
Yeah it’s unfortunate that elimination diet is the only way to actually tell if it’s CMPA as they don’t do proper allergy testing until they’re older 😣 I started with just dairy and her symptoms cleared up within 2 weeks. She had general tummy discomfort, a horrendous face rash that would flare up after feeds, green mucousy poo, and wheezing. Since I stopped dairy her poos have been yellow/normal, no wheezing, and her face is much better. She still does have a small bit of rash sometimes and the tummy discomfort so I’m thinking about trying no soy as well, but it’s hard to find things to eat as is with the no dairy
@Allie this was exactly my little girl. Stopping the dairy cleared 90% of the symptoms but there was still some so I cut soy out too x
@Leah Do you think it helped & cleared it up completely? I’m really hesitant because what do you even eat 😅

I am about 4 days complete soy free now and it can take up to a month to see a difference but I honestly saw a difference on literally day 1! It’s honestly much easier than you think once you’ve done a couple of food shops! X
A few of my friends removed dairy from their diet with a massive improvement to their baby. I think they would say that there’s a huge variety of dairy free alternatives now but I appreciate that most of those alternatives are more expensive. Also having smelt a lot of the dairy free milk (paediatric nurse) I can imagine you may find that you need to try combi feeding to begin with as the taste will be very different Good luck lovely ☺️
