How soon did you see a doctor/midwife?

Hi everyone! I’ve just found out I’m pregnant, it’s my first time and don’t have many friends with kids so I have no idea what to expect or what I should be doing 😅 I tried contacting my GP and it was impossible to get through, so I just self-referred to the hospital’s maternity services instead and they have already booked me in for my first appointment at the end of November (all online, there was no human interaction), but it just feels like quite a long time without seeing a medical professional. What are other people’s experiences? I know there’s not much to do medically before week 8 or so, but it stresses me out to be left to my own devices in these critical early weeks!

This is normal, booking appointment around 8 weeks and then scan at 12 weeks. You won’t see the midwife again until 16 weeks, scan at 20 and then midwife again at 24, 28 and then every 3 weeks from there. If you need any reassurance in the early weeks you’d need to book a private scan Congratulations!

Completely normal. If I’m being honest, I’d lower expectations of what you might think the service will be like. Don’t get me wrong, I know some fab midwives, but generally the service is rushed and not very effective so make sure you vocalise and advocate for yourself. There’s a reason why the maternity services are being so closely scrutinised in the media and with investigations right now. But hopefully you are one of those who have a great experience (it can be very area dependant).

Mines booked at the end of November and I'll be 10 weeks! With my first I was around 8.5 weeks x

That's about right to be honest. Your first scan won't be until 12 weeks and I had 1 appointment before that too. I've found I'm expecting my second but I'm not even going to refer until i get back from holiday as I go thailand in 2 weeks! X

My first appt is at 10 weeks and like you all done online

Thank you for the reassurance everyone! Feels a bit weird to navigate something so massive without much guidance but I’m glad to hear it’s the same for others too.
