How worried should I be?

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 36 weeks due to high hba1c level (41), my fasting level was fine. I've just been given the blood sugar testing kit (38 weeks). First day was fine but had two higher readings today. Breakfast (toast, egg, beans) was 8.4 and dinner (cabbage and potato curry with quinoa) was 8.6. I'm not sure if it's portion size and not drinking enough water. I've also seen in the group people talking about results of 10-11. I'm very near to the end now but just worried that this might have been happening for a while and the impact on baby.

Bread is high in sugar so always raises my sugar I recommend baker bread brown or just avoid , potato curry was properly the potato's, 50-60g of carbohydrates for lunch and dinner breakfast around 30g eat snacks through out day around 20g of carbohydrates. I wouldn't be too worried your near the end xxx

Always 15 minutes of walking cleaning or just being busy after meals.

@Sarah yes I thought the bread might have done it. There wasn't a lot of potato in the curry tbh. I would have eaten less than half a medium potato. It was mainly cabbage. I don't usually snack and so I think that's a habit change that I need to introduce. Thank you for the advice

@Sarah this is a good idea too. I've been just kind of waiting for the hour before getting on with things. Probably should just get on with things!

Hi . I’m the same 42 yrs old 38 weeks and having planned c section next week because of large baby and gd . My readings are being managed by food only as too far along for meds. Stay away from cereals and if there are carbs have a good amount of protein with it .

It’s probably the carbs in those meals that you need to reduce. You need to read up on everything. Beans have a surprisingly high amount of carb and sugar. I spent the fist week stood in supermarkets reading the nutritional info of foods and researching on gestationaldiabetes.co.uk. I aim for 20-30g of carbs per meal max then high protein and plenty of veg. Carbs always wholemeal/grain also.

I wouldn’t worry too much at your late stage. However breakfast was ‘naughty’ in terms of GD. Bread and beans are both bad. Potatoes would have been what took you high at lunch - some veggies also have carbs in,I’m not sure on cabbage or what quinoa is like but I know potato, beans and bread all would have sent me high. At your late stage I’d just swap to brown bread, rice, pasta and limit to small portions (one slice rather than 2 etc) and limit your sweet stuff. I’ve been on insulin and metformin since 25 weeks getting 10s and 11s so I had no chance 😂 but starting to get my head round it now. Also watch what you’re drinking (fresh juices etc are a big no no or sugar in tea and coffee)

@Sarah thank you. When I had my gestational diabetes class they said all of those things would be fine, which is why I wondered if it was portion size. I'll try cutting them out more and having smaller portion sizes. I have cut out sugary food and don't have sugar in drinks. I'm just so hungry in third trimester.

@Faiza it seems very odd that they would say beans are fine, they’re full of sugar! Especially when paired with bread (carbs) but you kinda learn on the job with GD what works and what doesn’t for you. Bread in really struggle to tolerate yet chips in much better with?! 😂 you need to pair your naughty things with protein, so I’ll have 2 slices of wholemeal toast (rarely) with at least 3 eggs to combat the carbs with loads of protein. Don’t know if you’re vegetarian but the curry would have been better as chicken curry rather than potato. Just some ideas to try anyway 😊

@Sarah they said small potatoes with skin on was better. One of the examples of a lunch meal was jacket potato with cheese and beans. So I was like oh this isn't too bad then. So I think I underestimated some things. There wasn't actually much potato in the cabbage curry and so I ate last than half a medium size potato. It was mainly cabbage but maybe with the quinoa and portion size it wasn't great.I'm not vegetarian and so the extra protein advice is helpful.

Toast and beans are all carby so you would expect to spike with that. Also your curry is very carby. You need to lair your carbs with high fats and proteins to keep your sugar levels stable x

@Faiza is this nhs advice? Potato and beans?!?! Absolute no no for GD 😅😅 Look at the gestational diabetes UK website and Facebook group for dietary advice that actually works. NHS advice is based on the wat well plate which unfortunate is no good for gestational diabetes x

@Alana yes, I think this is where I went wrong. Will have a look at those sites. Thanks

@Alana yeah me and you could no way get away with jacket and beans 🤣🤣🤣 I think they cocked up with the beans advice, I’m always high when I have them because I’d typically have them with another carb like potato or bread. Best to avoid 🤣

@Sarah stayed away from beans and toast for breakfast this morning and my readings are within range. I think mine is controllable with diet but just trying to figure out the diet!

@Faiza you will prob be giving birth by the time you figure that out . Take care

@Sarah I really wish I could lol.its one.lf my cravings 😅🫠

@Faiza protein yoghurts are good and I was told porridge with berries. They do send me a bit high sometimes but would probably be ok when diet controlled. Eggs, bacon? Stuff like that you will be fine with but breakfast is the hardest one to control I’d say
